Welcome to my profile. I'm Rob. My clients find therapy gives them a place to let go and be themselves. Therapy can be laid back and approachable - in fact, so much more seems possible when it is. It can be so liberating to truly be yourself. That means not worrying how you appear, if you'll offend someone, or if you'll be judged. Those things take so much effort. Here you can go for it! Say what you like, see what happens, let it all out. I promise I won't judge you. You deserve to be heard and understood from your point of view. If you didn't have enough of that in your life, here's a chance to make up for it.

I offer online counselling for individuals dealing with compulsive patterns and behaviors that started as a way to cope but ended up taking on a life of their own. These include drinking, substance use, pornography, overwork, and other habits that feel much harder to control than they should. You might find yourself saying to outdated emotional responses, thoughts and behaviours “this is the last time” only to end up back in the same place, carrying frustration, guilt, or shame. It can feel exhausting, confusing, and at times, isolating.

The ways we cope, relate and protect ourselves often develop through experiences where we may not have felt fully safe, seen or understood. Therapy can offer a different kind of relational space, one where you can explore your experiences gently, at your own pace, and begin reconnecting with yourself in ways that feel more grounded and authentic. Together, we can begin to make sense of patterns in how you experience yourself in relationship with others that may leave you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or alone. I offer a warm, reflective and emotionally attuned space where you can feel heard with care and without judgement.

I am here to support your healing process. Looking for a therapist is a courageous first step. I have found that common themes clients bring to therapy include: Feelings of shame and a lack of worthiness; being very self-critical; Feeling rejected, hurt, and alone; Stuck in relationships that are not fulfilling; Feeling that your life lacks purpose; Traumatic experiences that feel like they define you. Do any of these sound familiar? Would it help to have a space to work through these issues, to let go, and to feel greater freedom in your life? If any of these issues resonate with you then we can work together to make a difference.

If you (or your child) are seeking support to overcome some challenges in your life, counselling is a great way to explore your difficulties in a safe and non-judgmental space. A key part of the counselling process is the therapeutic relationship and I believe that due to my age this allows me to support you in greater ways. I empathise and understand the anxieties and pressures put on you by school/exams/university, the impact that growing up with social media and having an online persona can have on your self-esteem, how delicate family/friend relationships can be and the difficulties they can put onto you.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
