In my online practice, I work with people who feel stuck. Often, the things we do to cope with stress, anxiety, or low self esteem—like drinking, substance use, pornography, or overworking—start out as survival strategies but end up taking on a life of their own. I understand this territory. I bring trusted experience working in recovery centres, colleges, and supporting doctors dealing with burnout through Physicians Anonymous. But just as importantly, I understand it from my own personal life, too. I know how hard it is to break these patterns, and I know what it takes to navigate them.

My aim is to support clients to make lasting changes in their lives, reduce psychological distress and improve daily functioning. My twenty-plus years of practice have given me a broad experience, working with a wide range of clients. Every client is an individual and each initial meeting is spent finding out about that individual - I want to know what brings you to therapy now, what are your goals, what does life look like, what are your successes, difficulties, needs and what has been the story of your life so far? We use this to form a shared understanding and to plan for working together therapeutically.

Maybe you've got particular challenges right now that you need some help to cope with or maybe you can't quite put your finger on one problem but you know that something needs to change and you're struggling to do that alone. Whatever it is that has led you to seek help I believe that the first step in making a change is finding connection with someone you can trust. Developing a secure therapeutic relationship can help you find greater self-acceptance, improve relationships, develop healthier ways to cope and process difficult experiences safely. The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of the person-centred approach.

Some come with a clear issue such as addiction, bereavement, anxiety, trauma, or relationship difficulties. Others feel stuck, overwhelmed, or aware that life no longer feels as it once did. I offer a grounded, compassionate space where clients can speak openly, make sense of difficult experiences, and begin to move towards change in a way that feels manageable and meaningful.

I work with adults and young people who may be feeling overwhelmed, emotionally stuck, anxious, lost, or struggling to cope with life’s challenges. Many come to counselling because they are experiencing anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship difficulties, grief, trauma, low self-esteem, or significant life changes. Others may not have a clear reason but simply know that something doesn’t feel right and want a safe space to talk and better understand themselves.

I am an experienced Clinical Psychotherapist who works with a wide range of issues from Depression and Anxiety to complex mental health issues. My view is that we all have times in our lives when things can become difficult for us, or we feel there is no way forward. Our friends and family can offer support, but often this isn't enough, or there are feelings you just can't share and may hold onto for years. I strongly believe that each person has the potential for positive growth. To gain greater insight and a fresh perspective on their life. Allowing recognition of their strength within, to take hold of, and move forward.

Hi I'm Angela. Prior to training as a therapist I was with the emergency services for many years working with victims of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). I've also worked with adult victms of rape and sexual abuse, and victims of child abuse and domestic violence. As a result I'm able to hear anything you bring. Any parts of you that worry they may be "too much" may feel reassured to know I can handle whatever you choose to share with me. I'm trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) , Trauma- Focussed CBT and Person - Centred Therapy. You can choose which model you'd prefer, or work with a combination.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
