Many of the people I work with feel overwhelmed, stuck or unsure of who they are becoming. They want clarity, confidence and a calmer inner world but often carry long-standing patterns that feel hard to shift alone. I offer a steady, compassionate space where you can explore your feelings, understand your story and make sense of the deeper roots of your struggles. Together, we work toward creating a more grounded, connected and authentic sense of self so you can move forward with greater ease.

Counselling can help with a wide range of issues such as bereavement, loss of purpose or identity, anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, ill health, low self-worth or self-esteem, relationship challenges or a sense of something missing in life.
Many clients comment on the value of having an hour once a week or fortnight to talk openly about their issues, being free to say whatever they wish and express any emotions without fear of offending or having opinions expressed by family members or well-meaning friends. I work either online or face-to-face from my home in Balsall Common.

On meeting, we will discuss your hopes / fears, and set goals as appropriate.
Both in and out of sessions, I encourage self-care and self-compassion. Having diagnoses of both Autism and ADHD, I focus on neurodivergence and how it can impact wellbeing and self-esteem. I also work with adult daughters who have destabilising or unhealthy relationships with their mothers... moving toward greater self-respect and autonomy here is vital for your own growth. We will agree on "homework" tasks; utilising boundary-setting, CBT and NLP for optimal outcomes. If you are committed to deepening self-understanding, contact me to talk about how we might work together towards your better, bolder, more liberated future.

People seek counselling and psychotherapy for various reasons. Not everyone knows what is bothering them. Often it is the difficulties and challenges of daily life that become overwhelming and unmanageable, impacting relationships, work and decision making. It is sometimes beyond the control of the individual to address those issues without professional help.

Parents contact me because they are concerned about their child's behaviour or development, sometimes they can see that their child is worried, cross or seems sad.
I always start with a full assessment so we can understand why a concern is there, and why it isn't getting better by itself, as often things do. Any intervention is then tailor-made, based on this understanding. Sometimes I work just with parents, sometimes 1:1 with the child and sometimes with the whole family. I use a range of evidence-based approaches.

Reaching out for therapy can feel like a huge step. Sometimes a particular experience leads us to seek therapy, or we may want to explore significant themes in our lives or how we relate to others. You may want to explore both of these. Maybe you're currently feeling that you would benefit from exploring the impact our past has on our day-to-day life and relationships.

I offer a safe non judgemental space to explore, express and understand what is happening for that person. I work creatively and around what suits the client. Hi, my name is Alec, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I understand that seeking counselling or therapy can be a deeply personal experience and it can be difficult to take that first step. For this reason, I strive to offer clients a safe, friendly, and compassionate space to explore their difficulties while they learn about themselves and find healthier alternative ways to live their lives. I do not give advice and fully believe you are the expert on how to be you. However, no matter what your difficulty maybe I can offer you empathy, understanding and support as we work together. If you are seeking change, therapy may be helpful.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
