I work in-depth with people who are struggling day-to-day or are feeling unfulfilled in their lives. You can talk to me about anything, and together we will explore what's leaving you feeling empty, troubled or overwhelmed. Having trained in an NHS psychotherapy unit, I am well versed in working with a wide variety of hardships. In addition, I worked in corporate settings for over a decade and coached individuals in that world, gaining an MBA and an MSc before training in psychotherapy. As part of my advanced training for a doctorate in psychotherapy I also have opportunities available for low-fee, intensive psychotherapy.

Mindfulness-Based Core Process Psychotherapy is a relational and embodied enquiry in which we can together explore how it is that you ‘do’ you. I offer a setting of compassion, acceptance and non-judgemental listening, and value these qualities in our working relationship. I am interested in what your experience is and, as you can begin to feel understood, in how you might begin to express and experience yourself differently. Having a place to bring yourself, your worries, your issues, can be a relief and can be deeply rewarding as we honour the feelings that move inside you and allow your own innate wisdom to find it's way.

The move towards seeking therapy is a big step, and one that can quite easily become daunting. There are numerous modalities, acronyms and approaches; finding the right one for you can be difficult. I aim to simplify this with my clients, by providing a grounded and present listening ear, backed up my the theory I have studied. As we get to know each other the approach you are looking for will generally become clearer. My training as an Integrative practitioner means I can draw upon various modalities, which I have found to be very helpful for 'meeting' the client exactly where they are at.

I believe that our capacity to cope with issues that arise in adult life, whether this is how we experience the world, relate to others, cope with difficult situations or understand and manage what can often be overwhelming emotions, is ultimately bound up with our early experiences. Whether we wish to or not we carry our history with us and sometimes this does not provide the strong foundation needed to engage and embrace life or weather its storms. I work with clients to recognise the origins of their difficulties so that together we might arrive at a place where life is understandable, and they feel both validated and valued.

Are you distrustful, fearful and overwhelmed by your own emotions and sensations? Do you wish you could just make them go away? Issues arising from trauma or early attachment wounds may manifest in a number of ways including painful thoughts and memories, anxiety, depression, rage, physical pain and sensations (including unexplained physical symptoms, CFS, fibromyalgia and low energy). By viewing our thoughts, sensations, feelings and behaviours not as symptoms, but as parts of us that had to adapt to cope with life, we can get to know and heal these parts in a compassionate and non-pathologising way.

People sometimes think counselling is only for those who have experienced severe trauma. It’s not. My clients don’t always know the cause of their discomfort. They just know that something isn’t quite right. I’m a firm believer that everyone can benefit from counselling. My clients come to me for a variety of reasons. Some want counselling to recover from childhood trauma, domestic abuse or physical violence. Others feel isolated, alone and unheard. Perhaps you’ve experienced bullying, low self-esteem or suicidal thoughts. Many of my clients don’t really know what’s wrong. They just feel burdened, unhappy or ‘stuck’.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
