It can be incredibly difficult for us to reach out and a certain amount of courage is needed in doing so, therefore just being here is absolutely amazing, you have already taken the first step! I have trained as an integrative counsellor, drawing on many theoretical models in order to have more tools to work with and be better equipped to help a wider variety of people…
You may be feeling like your life is out of balance and you are unable to make sense of it all. Or you might be feeling a general sense of dissatisfaction with your life. if you have experienced some painful losses like losing someone close to you or going through major life transitions like separation or perhaps a loss of direction or meaning in your life, counselling can be life changing and be your chance to deepen your understanding of yourself; your needs, healthier ways of coping with difficulties and relating to others. I specialize in Relationship issues for Individuals and Couples, with partners and family, and with our personal relationship with Self growth and change. I work from a lovely private room in Totnes, or online, drawing on different techniques and experience into a holistic, caring approach. Discussion and reflection helps to gain understanding, perspective and insight on issues, and for individual clients who wish to help deal with the more sub-conscious patterns and historical issues which are usually at the root of our stories, I provide a range of effective techniques that can help to move things forward.
Life can feel like a struggle, or we may feel that we’re just not living the life that we’d like to. Perhaps you’re questioning who you are? Sometimes, whether we have others around us or not, we can feel lonely. We may feel that we have no-one to talk to. My aim is to provide a space to BE. A space to be seen, heard and valued. A space to explore what might be troubling you, who you are, and how you might cultivate a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling. In particular, I specialise in working with Highly Sensitive People as defined by Elaine Aron, and how life experiences may affect this minority of people.
Anxiety is normal. Yes, I just said that! Yet many of us grow up with the idea that anxious feelings are negative and to be avoided at all costs. I spent years trying to escape my anxiety, which only made it worse. The more I pushed, the more it pushed back, until I spent all my time pushing. It was exhausting, resulting in OCD behaviours and panic attacks. Then I learnt to change my relationship with anxiety. I realised that to be anxious is to be human. I stopped struggling and instead began to work with my anxiety in new ways that gave me more options, both in the moment and in the long term.
I have a lot of respect for anyone who chooses to begin counselling. It takes courage to be open with someone, and I don't take that for granted. As an Integrative counsellor, I have a range of therapeutic tools to help towards a breakthrough, particularly for clients who live with anxiety, depression, or present difficulties relating to past traumas. As human beings, we are wired for survival, and continually adjust to protect ourselves from threats and challenges. As our circumstances change through life, we may notice that the patterns which once kept us safe are now holding us back.
