Counselling in Kingsbridge

Hi, my name is Natasha and I am an Intuitive Counsellor.
Intuitive counselling delves deep into understanding the difference between our conditioned mind and our intuitive self. The more we practice being present, the more we listen to our intuition, observing how our mind gets cluttered by past or future thoughts. When we live in the present, we become less controlled by our thoughts; we start seeing those unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. This is a practice like any other as it is about re-training our behavioral patterns, creating that space of connection within ourselves, and learning to listen and trust our intuition.

I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties including: relationship difficulties - with partners, family members, friends, colleagues; identity difficulties; career dissatisfaction and career change; bullying; bereavement; finding purpose in life; navigating big life changes such as re-locating and moving house; fertility issues; parenting; menopause; living with (or without) grown up children; and women focussed work.
I specialise in working with people who are parents, or planning on becoming parents. The experiences we have as parents can be enormously challenging - especially when breaking negative cycles.

Hello, I’m Christine, and I welcome you warmly. I can appreciate that reaching out to a therapist might feel a little daunting. It may be that you are holding onto some painful emotions, or experiencing stress or anxiety. Or, that you really need someone to talk to who will listen without judgement and seek to understand what is going on for you. You might also be looking to find a work/life balance and explore realistic positive changes to support your well-being. Together we can explore what can support you right now, to gain understanding and insight, and discover ways to make the changes you hope for.

I work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully. Psychotherapy and counselling is often called the 'talking cure'. People often value such help during a time of transition and change, crisis or loss when it is difficult to know 'what to do'? I believe it is always possible to improve the way in which people tackle their problems and to use times of difficulty to make changes for the better.

Most often, I work with clients who need a safe, confidential space to make sense of different types of relational hurt. In the first instance, I make plenty of time to for us to talk about and establish your goals for therapy, so we're both clear how you'd like things to be, how you’d like to feel and what it is you hope gain from the process. From this point, I see our work as a collaborative exploration in moving towards where you want to be, equipping you with the tools you need to find meaning, purpose and a greater sense of peace and ease in the world.

In my experience we may all at times face hurdles too daunting to negotiate alone. I work with a wide range of issues focussing on clients who have suffered sexual abuse, as well as young people and adults experiencing stress, anxiety, trauma, panic attacks, depression and low self esteem. We may have issues and patterns of behaviour from the past that we are ready to leave behind. I offer a safe, confidential therapeutic space to be heard and feel safe. In some cases I work in the here and now, in others I believe in order to understand and find our inner resources to change present behaviour we need to delve into our past.

I'm an experienced counsellor working with adults, from a warm and comfortable room in the centre of Totnes. I support a lot of people who feel limited or stuck, often by habitual patterns of behaviour which started early in life and which have been reinforced over the years. This can show up in many situations, in relationship, in crises or during big life transitions, for example. Those patterns will have started out as protective, but may have become restrictive in adult life, and in need of an update, to allow for growth and forward movement.

I remember watching others interactions and feeling as though I was looking in as an observer? An alien observing a different culture and prone to offend and insult without intention. Then I came to understand that I wasn't the problem. My undiagnosed Autism was the problem. I understand what it is to feel like a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. Depression and anxiety can build to intolerable depths. But it doesn't have to stay that way. I am experienced in helping people evaluate, accept and thrive in their new reality.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
