Psychodynamic Counselling in King's Lynn
Through therapy, my clients begin to feel more present in their relationships, develop greater confidence and self-worth, and feel more in control of their emotions. Many notice the same difficulties appearing across different areas of life — conflict avoidance, fear of rejection, anxiety, people-pleasing, or difficulty trusting others. For some, these patterns can be traced back to early family dynamics or losses that were never fully processed. Once these patterns are understood, it becomes possible to live in a way that feels more authentic, connected, and free.

I draw on humanistic philosophy, some cognitive behavioural intervention and psychodynamic theory.
Hi, I’m Ruth!
I experience many clients saying that they don’t believe that their problems are bad enough - there must be others in need who are suffering more, or that it is indulgent to go for counselling. Maybe people around them have questioned if they really need to get help? If you are finding it hard to manage for whatever reason, remember that you deserve to be heard and that your experiences, memories and feelings are real for you.
Maybe someone around you is suggesting that you should seek some help and you aren’t sure. Ultimately it is your choice.
When any type of mental health or emotional concern affects daily

I work with older children (12+) and adults. I specialise in working with issues related to ADHD, anxiety, domestic abuse, sexuality, and addiction/alcoholism. I have previously worked voluntarily for two charities counselling young people affected by domestic abuse, and with people in addiction recovery. I am an integrative counsellor and can work with many different modalities, and all my work has a person centred foundation. Therefore sessions are led by my clients needs as an individual. We work together to find the best way forward.

After a while, trying to manage everything alone can feel isolating and unproductive. Thoughts repeat, worries build, and despite your best efforts, nothing really shifts. Therapy offers a collaborative space where we work together to understand, challenge, and change the patterns keeping you stuck. As a CBT therapist, I help you notice unhelpful cycles in thinking and behaviour, and develop practical ways to respond differently. This isn’t about “thinking positive,” but gaining clarity, control, and new ways of coping so life feels less overwhelming and more manageable.

I trained as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and following 23 years working in the NHS I have been working in private practice since 2013.
I work with clients of all ages. Many of my clients bring unconscious trauma to our sessions and we work together to help unravel the origins of the trauma. In my person centred approach, the client builds an understanding of how the trauma has impacted their life and affected the relationships with those around them.
I endeavour to create a safe, non judgemental environment and I am conscious that the therapeutic space should offer conditions appropriate to the clients needs.

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger issues, shame, relationships, addiction problems and more, then you will no doubt find psychotherapy and counselling very helpful. If you are struggling with any of these problems, then I know the isolating pain they can cause, but I have seen depression turn to joy, despair into hope and self-hatred into self-love. It is very important that you feel safe and comfortable and that is why I offer a £30 first session (initial assessment) so you can see if I am right for you

Most people are currently in or have tried to be in relationships. These may be with partners, family members, children or with work colleagues. Mental health issues or traumas that have happened earlier in life can often impact those relationships and cause stress. Often individuals feel stuck with these difficulties repeating them although they don't work. Individual or couple counselling can help here. So can focusing on other effects like working with the family or the children.

I may use interventions from various modalities, but with a core psychodynamic philosophy which places importance upon childhood, relationships and root causes of problems which may be unconscious.
I'm an experienced psychotherapist working with relationship and attachment issues, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Clients that begin to work with me often do so because they find that their feelings, thoughts or symptoms have begun to affect areas of functioning in life; they find that coping mechanisms that have been helpful in the past are beginning to work less effectively.
My attachment-based approach means that I am interested in your past - our early relationships determine how we connect with others as adults, how we view ourselves, and how we regulate ourselves.

Hi, I'm Leigh, and I believe people usually come to therapy not because something is “wrong” with them, but because life has become overwhelming or difficult to carry alone. Many of the people I work with struggle with anxiety, overthinking, anger, low self-esteem, or relationship difficulties and feel stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand. My approach is warm, collaborative, and non-judgemental. Together we can explore what’s going on beneath the surface, develop greater self-understanding, and begin finding ways forward that feel more manageable and empowering.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
