Therapy can be a space to tell – and own – your story, to take the pieces that don’t seem to add up and find a new way to fit them together.
Is there something troubling or upsetting you, a part of your life you find yourself unable to ignore or make sense of? Perhaps you’re feeling as though happiness and fulfilment are somehow out of reach, or you’re struggling with longer-term challenges, such as stress, anxiety, low mood or depression. All of these issues, and more, can be addressed in counselling.

People come to talk to me for lots of reasons. Sometimes there is a defined problem, it may be longstanding or recent; it may be related to a life event or something upcoming that is raising anxiety; there may be questions or difficulties in some key relationships, or at work; it may not be clear at all, but you are experiencing unease and wish to get to the bottom of why. Coming to talk to a trained and registered psychotherapist guarantees a secure, safe and confidential space in which to explore any or all of the above, alone, as a couple or in a family group.

I understand that the decision to start therapy is rarely made lightly, and taking that first step can feel overwhelming. You may be feeling apprehensive, anxious, and sceptical about sharing your innermost thoughts and emotions with a stranger. It takes immense courage to be vulnerable and talk about the difficulties you are experiencing, and I want you to know that I fully appreciate and respect your decision to seek help. You might be facing a specific problem that you want to address, such as relationship issues, anxiety. Alternatively, you may have a sense that something in your life is not quite right, but cannot identify it.

Often our anxieties and difficulties can weigh us down and we are unable to find a way forward. Our thoughts and feelings can be confusing and talking to friends and relatives about our concerns may be too difficult. I provide a confidential, safe, respectful and non-judgemental space in which you can explore your difficulties, gain insight and discover a way forward. I provide a counselling relationship where you are heard, understood and accepted. This is extremely powerful because it allows you to open up and express all of your thoughts and feelings and gain a new awareness which leads to the potential for positive change.

I am always mindful of the fact that taking the first steps towards counselling can be the hardest. Actually admitting you need some help. Finding the right person to walk with you on this journey is I believe central to the process of counselling. I am wholly committed to providing you with a safe, non-judgemental space, where you can begin to work through your difficulties. Mental health, is just like our physical health, it's variable and sometime we need help to recover, whether that be from a bereavement, anxiety, depression, long term trauma issues, etc

At times we all feel vulnerable in life and taking that first step to access support can feel daunting. Therapy may help if you are feeling like you have lost your way, feel unsettled, or you may be experiencing more intense feelings such as anxiety or depression. You may have experienced trauma (recently or in the past), or you may be in a life transition such as parenthood or retirement. I have a specialist interest and experience in antenatal, postnatal and parenting difficulties and have over 10 years’ experience working specifically in this area in the NHS.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
