Sometimes life is confusing, painful and problematic and we are troubled, distressed and not at peace with our lives or, ourselves. I fully believe that therapy is a setting in which we are able to speak freely and not feel judged; a place where we are met with empathy and understanding. I truly believe a setting such as this provides the basis from which healing can begin. It is absolutely my belief that the answers to our questions lie within us and we just need some assistance in navigating to those answers. Whatever it is you are seeking help with, I would love to work with you to find your answers, clarity and peace.

I have experience in helping people with concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, troubling thoughts and feelings, panic attacks, trauma, sexual abuse and suicidal thoughts.
Life can throw challenges at us that prove too much for us to cope with on our own. I believe that we are not to blame for the difficulties we might face, and that they are the natural consequences of what we have experienced in life. If you are feeling stuck and unable to change things yourself, or repeating difficult and destructive patterns of behaviour, working with and talking with someone not involved in your life can help make profound change. Together we can explore what has helped to shape the way you are now, and how you want to be in the future, in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space.

My counselling experience is varied and includes working with people who have problems with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, work stress and coping with mid-life transitions.
Perhaps you are feeling lost, in a 'strange place' or no longer feel yourself to be the person you once were. You'd like to understand why this is and talk about your difficult feelings with someone who is non-judgmental and who can help you better understand them.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT as the psychological treatment of choice for many presenting difficulties, including anxiety presentations and depression and I am EMDR trained.
Feeling stuck in your emotional life? Your tried and tested strategies for coping aren't working? Or has there been a significant life event that has caused distress or made you re-evaluate where you are and where you are going? Has your doctor recommended Cognitive Behavioural Therapy? Talking through your difficulties with an Accredited CBT Therapist can help to reduce emotional distress by developing alternative thoughts, behaviours and feelings. By developing flexible attitudes and behaviours you can cope more effectively now and in the future. These skills build resilience to manage challenges. They are transferrable.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
