Our consciousness is like a small candle in vast darkness; we must not let it go out. Sometimes when we are faced with life challenges, our mind falters like a candle in the wind; we are confused, sad, angry, or agitated, and at times like this we need listening ears to listen to us and help us decipher our experiences to make sense of what is causing these emotional reactions and pain. Sometimes, confusion and contamination of our minds can be brought about by broken relationships, job loss, bereavement, mental illness, toxic relations, racism, oppression, wrong religious beliefs, divorce and cultural influences to mention a few.

I work with families, couples and individuals. Specialising in relationships, anger, self-esteem issues, addictions and emotional difficulties, I help you have a better relationship with others as well as yourself. I work with you to explore and understand your struggles, repeating patterns and find ways to change them or adapt them to make them helpful. Couples tend to argue in a cyclic nature without ever resolving their arguments. I work with couples to understand this cycle and how to exit it. Individuals can also get stuck in repeating patterns. Examining them, understanding them and working through them brings change.

We all suffer from downturns and setbacks in our lives, believe me when I say that I am no exception! But it doesn't have to be the end of the road, perhaps more like a bend in the road. It's hard to see around those corners though. If you're feeling stuck at the bend without the support you need to get through, be it from the overwhelming electric feelings of anxiety; the slowing drudge of depressive thoughts and feelings, or the pain of losing a loved one, support is here for you.

Hello and welcome. My name is Katherine Coates and I am a qualified Person Centred therapist. My journey to become a qualified counsellor started after I entered therapy myself so am well aware of how terrifying taking the first steps in asking for help can be. Therefore, I aim to offer a safe space where you feel accepted and valued enough that you can reveal your vulnerabilities without fear of judgement.

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist who is interested in helping clients find a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives, coping with anxiety and depression and helping them find more fulfilling relationships. I enjoy working with people who feel like 'outsiders', and also have a wealth of experience in working with addictions and integrating disturbing experiences - including clients who want to integrate experiences with psychedelic substances, or have recovered from psychosis. I am also interested in working with people who have been in relationships which have been abusive, helping them to learn to move forward into new more healthy relationships.

I am an experienced psychotherapist in private practise, as well as teaching faculty on foundation and advanced counselling courses in Exeter, UK. I firmly believe that we are fundamentally relational beings, ones that need security, understanding & care above all else. Real change comes not from trying to fix thinking patterns, self-concepts or the past, but in shifting relational dynamics in the here and now and finding new ways of being with another. This is what I focus on in therapy with my clients,

I often work with people who are coming to terms with past trauma, or who are unsatisfied with their lives. Perhaps you find yourself repeating the same patterns over and over, or perhaps you struggle to identify and express your feelings. I offer an open minded space to think together and understand what is happening for you, and how you might go about changing things. I am interested in the ways in which our environment affects us, and pay attention to the impact of class, racialisation, disability, migration status, gender, etc. I work with all kinds of people, including lgbtq+ people, and I am trans affirmative.

I am great at supporting people to grow and heal, to access the most fully functioning version of themselves. You may have a difficult past, problems in the present or fear about the future. You'll need to feel safe to speak about deep feelings and it can take a little time for this trust to develop. It will help if you are willing to be kind to yourself and to explore ways to say the things that feel most difficult or scary. It can be useful to try to be curious about yourself, to notice and name thoughts and feelings as they arise, I will engage with care and without judgment.

Is there something troubling you? Something upsetting you? Something making you sad, anxious, angry, fearful, lonely or unheard? Have you lost someone you love or lost direction? Or is it something inside that you can’t fathom out, but is affecting your life? These feelings and many others are ones we all face during our lives and when they remain unaddressed they can lead to anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship problems, work issues, loss of self-confidence and self-esteem, or simply a feeling of being stuck. The good news is that therapy can help you explore one's issues you in a safe, caring and confidential space.

Hi, I'm Marc - If you’re ready for someone who’s human first, counsellor second - I’m here. Are you juggling a lot - stress that never clocks out, trauma that won’t stay small, high standards, low energy, and that nagging voice saying “Why can’t I just cope?” Maybe you’re burnt out, masking with humour, or stuck in the loop of “I’m fine” when you’re anything but. You want relief, clarity, from someone who actually gets it, not a clipboard robot. You want a space where you can swear, laugh, cry, contradict yourself, and still feel safe. You want life to suck less - and maybe even feel good

Hello, my name is Austin and I work as an integrative therapist worldwide via internet platforms including Skype and Zoom. I’ve received lots of therapy over the years when I have been struggling to cope with difficult situations and also when seeking to understand myself a bit better, it really helped. If you are going through a similar stage in life and are looking for someone to talk to in complete confidence, without judgment and at a pace that suits you then I can help.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
