As an author and therapist, I have spent over 30 years studying the mind, looking for real solutions to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, addiction and despair.
If you're feeling depressed or anxious and can't seem to shift this state of mind no matter what you try, or you feel like you can't get control of your 'self' in some fundamental way, then you might like to try IFS therapy. This gives clients a model for working with their own minds which can be used both in therapy and in daily life. It puts you easily back in the driving seat – and after years of feeling that there's nothing you can do about the moods that tend to sweep over you, that can be a huge relief.

I specialize in COUPLES' ISSUES /relational issues, as well as depression, anxiety, divorce separation, addiction, co-dependency, social anxiety, loss, sexual issues, domestic violence, identity issues and addressing trauma histories.
As it is normal to experience emotional difficulties during life, counselling is one way of supporting you at such times. Some of the ways that couples therapy can work include, identifying toxic relationship patterns and helping couples to work on changing these, bringing a new perspective to issues and helping couples to understand each other's perspectives, finding new ways to resolve conflicts, building trust and improving communication. Most importantly, providing a safe space for both partners to work through their issues.

Do you have a space in your life to sit, reflect and be truly honest? Are you juggling overwhelming emotions such as anxiety, depression, anger, loss, frustration and you feel alone with your thoughts? Are you struggling to connect with people in your life? Do you feel lost at work or in your home life? Do you tend to self-sabotage or doubt your own ability? Often we choose to invest in our physical health, our home, our lifestyle, hobbies, vacations, but is there sometimes a reluctance to do the same with our mental health? Perhaps hoping the issues will correct themselves?

I believe our childhood experiences form who we are in our adult relationships, we carry with us the traumas we experience in our lives, these can manifest themselves as psychological and physiological problems, we have to survive so we bury the unpleasant feelings, they are buried alive and want to get out, we suffer, experiencing anxiety, depression, mental and physical illness, the internal and external voices are overwhelming. Counselling is an opportunity to address these feelings, to sit with emotions that may be unfamiliar. I know counselling can help because I have seen many individuals break the cycle.

You know something isn’t right in your life, but you don’t quite know where to begin to get help. Maybe the idea of speaking with somebody feels a little daunting, or you’re concerned you won’t be able to find the words, or they won’t understand where you’re coming from. This is absolutely normal, and is what most people feel before the call a therapist to get help. Even if you’ve been to counselling and psychotherapy before, the thought of explaining your story yet again might fill you with dread. What you could really do with is somebody that gets it, that you can feel comfortable with, that can help you feel understood, quickly.

At some point in our lives most of us have had times where we find life is difficult and are not sure where to turn or which direction to take to solve these issues. I believe choosing the right counsellor for you is extremely important - it stands to reason that if you feel a connection with someone you will work more productively towards your end goal. I work with clients with many areas of difficulty - anxiety, depression, relationship/emotional problems, addictions, past influences or life crisis situations such as bereavement, divorce. Counselling should be non judgemental, accepting and supportive.

Getting to this point is a big step, fighting the internal and external stigma and what seeking support means for us. I believe that we all bring a story or script that has until now, dictated and limited the options we feel are available to us. Through our work together we can identify unhelpful or destructive thoughts, feelings and behaviours. My professional passion is working with: Couples & Individuals with relationship problems (with others or self) Groups and Families.

Are you feeling low? Anxious? Questioning your worth for others and yourself? Feeling isolated irrespective of your social and community connections? You are not alone. Whilst battling these internal conflicts can leave you feeling alienated, and somewhat of a black sheep, my experiences, both professionally and personally, suggest that these are universal of human living. I have worked with a range of such experiences, including depression, suicide ideation, domestic violence, racial identity and various LGBTQ+ issues, including gender identity and expression and sexuality.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
