I work in person at The Grove Therapy practice in the centre of Ilkley.
Hi, I’m Sarah. I imagine at the moment you might not be experiencing life as you'd hope to. Perhaps you feel anxious, sad, overwhelmed, stuck, lost, angry, frustrated, alone and/or are experiencing difficulties in your relationships. All these emotions are part of being human, but at times they can feel like they are taking over, causing distress and difficulties. It can help to talk, and I offer a gentle, respectful, kind and compassionate presence, keen to listen without judgement, welcoming the whole of you, at your own pace. I aim to be alongside you, working together to help you achieve the outcomes you desire from therapy.

Currently offering sessions in-person in Yorkshire and worldwide on Zoom.
Do you feel devastated after an affair, or trapped in the hurt and mistrust that followed? I provide specialist couples counselling for partners facing the hardest challenges - betrayal, sex & intimacy that’s vanished, the same fight on repeat, or the complexities of neurodiverse or poly relationships. By the time people find me, they’ve usually tried everything else. My style is structured, direct, and designed to create change. One couple put it this way: “When all hope was lost, Shan’s help and guidance enabled us to reconnect and be stronger than we have ever been".

I offer sessions in person, or via video/telephone call.
I understand what it takes to start a therapy journey, and I endeavour to support that process sensitively and with purpose. Your needs and goals are what we will work on together, whilst investigating and learning along the way. The pace is set by you, and how we work can be flexible to how you are feeling on the day. No pressure, just kindness, support, and a space to explore. Feeling safe enough to communicate your challenges is key. This is what I offer, alongside my extensive experience of practice in working with complex issues and distress.

As an Art Psychotherapist, I work from a psychodynamic perspective, paying close attention to how early experiences, unconscious processes, and relational patterns shape current emotional life. I offer a consistent space to explore thoughts, feelings, and internal conflicts with depth and curiosity. Art-making provides an additional route for unconscious material to emerge and be understood. No artistic experience is needed.

I offer online and face to face therapy depending on your preference and what you are most comfortable with.
Are anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or low mood preventing you from enjoying life or feeling like yourself? Perhaps you are constantly worrying, overthinking, struggling with panic, or finding it difficult to switch off. Maybe a traumatic experience from the past continues to affect you in the present. You do not have to face these difficulties alone, and recovery is possible. My aim is not simply to help you cope with symptoms, but to support you in making meaningful and lasting changes so that you can get back to living the life you want.

I work in person from my offices in Skipton and Ilkley and online via Zoom.
All of us have our periods of struggle. Life has a habit of throwing things at us - stress, loss, bereavement, anxiety, relationship troubles - that can throw us off course. Relationships are tough; work and family too. But you don't have to manage it all on your own. Talking to me about your anxiety, depression, anger, stress, addictions or loss can help plot a path through life's difficult times and rediscover yourself. Working together in a calm, focused way, we can understand your unique patterns and needs, find coping strategies, and look at ways to change the things we can, and accept the things we can't.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
