My particular passion is working with people coping, adapting and living with chronic illness; having my own long-term illnesses has made me aware of the limitations of support available.
I am a person-centred therapist, which means I centre my practice around supporting clients to work through problems, process past events and improve well-being and self-esteem, while taking into account their unique personal circumstances and therapy goals. My aim is to support you to help you realise your own potential to heal and grow.

Helping clients overcome concerns such as disordered eating, body image issues, anxiety, relationship issues, low mood, and low self esteem, and learning to live with life events like chronic illness.
Sometimes life can be overwhelming and during these times, whatever they may be, we may develop patterns, thoughts and behaviours that can become unhelpful or tough to challenge. Counselling and psychotherapy can help you explore and understand patterns that have emerged in your life and provides an opportunity to work through these. It can help to relieve pain, depression or anxiety, help you make decisions, help you to work towards better relationships with those around you, or live a life according to what is important to you.

Sometimes it can be difficult to fully understand why we are feeling a certain way and I believe that therapy is a good place to work through this and identify what you would like to change and where to begin. I believe that the relationship between us is a really important part of therapy as it forms a foundation for the work that we do together. I consider theories from an integrative perspective meaning that the approach I take might change, respecting your uniqueness to fit with what you would like to get from therapy. I work with the body in mind, it can give us so much information about how we hold our experiences.

If you also have physical health issues, then this can be even more distressing and potentially isolating. I believe it is important to tailor therapy to meet your needs/goals. We can create a safe space to reflect upon your experiences, and collaboratively find ways to manage the difficulties you are experiencing.

There is no one 'right' way or 'real' reason to start therapy - I can help you engage with what is essential to and for you, with no expectations of what that might be. Seeking a therapist is a step toward finding a safe and supportive relationship for your thoughts and feelings. Some people approach therapy with a specific issue to explore and work on, it is not unusual to feel that there are multiple issues to address. Others think it isn't clear why they want to begin creating a space for them to work out what they want and need. Wherever a client is, I will meet them where they need me to be.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
