Hi, I'm Liz and I work with children and young people at Jacaranda Therapy as an Accredited Play and Creative Arts Therapist. Childhood and adolescence can be really difficult for a number of reasons, and play therapy and creative arts counselling is an amazing way to help young people explore and express their emotions in a safe space, and find healthy coping mechanisms to help them in the future so that they can thrive and have the best outcomes possible. I use an integrative, holistic approach where young people have a choice of mediums to use including paint, sand, lego, clay, puppets, role play, sensory activities, books.

We can talk if that is most comfortable to you, but I also offer Arts Psychotherapy using a number of different art forms to connect with your intuition and inner resources.
Do you feel stuck? Wish for more creativity and to use your full potential instead of feeling held back by your fears? I can support you to tap into your own creative flow and work through fears, negative thought patterns and feelings that might be keeping you stuck. We can learn and harvest the messages your patterns are ready to teach you together. Your difficulties do not have to be your way of life and they do not have to define you. You are worth so much more than your worries and I would love to join you in the journey towards resilience, looking after you and discovering who you really are and what you are capable of!

We'll combine talking with art to help you make sense of life, safely feel, and process emotions that are stored in your body as trauma memories.
Life is challenging and can feel like you’re on a hamster wheel of pressure, ‘have-tos’ and obligations. The more you do, the more the wheel spins, and the faster you descend into overwhelm, stress, anxiety, and burn-out. I can support you to overcome these challenges, as well as relational trauma and abuse, racial trauma, grief, low self-esteem, and life transitions. I offer a compassionate space for us to explore what you have experienced in life, how these experiences shaped you, and how you can make comfortable changes that support you to live a joyful, balanced, inspired, and fulfilling life.

Whether through deep conversations, creative therapy, or practical coaching techniques, we'll work towards building a life that truly fits you.
Is this what life was supposed to feel like? Perhaps you’ve hit the milestones - building your career, nurturing relationships, and keeping a busy social life. From the outside, everything seems fine. But inside, something feels... off. You can’t shake the nagging feeling that life wasn’t supposed to feel this uncertain, this uninspiring, or this overwhelming. Maybe the job you worked so hard for no longer excites you. Maybe your relationships are shifting, and you’re questioning what’s next. Or perhaps you’re simply wondering if this is all there is: is this it?

My name is Leigh and I am licensed art psychotherapist.
Art making can help you discover parts of your inner self and express them through metaphor, which helps us explore our emotions in a safe space. It is not an art class and you do not need to be "good at art." The focus of art therapy is on the process of making, not the product. I will work with you to put you at ease - no experience necessary!

While most of the work takes place through talking, when appropriate I can also offer more creative ways of working ( art, play, music…) as sometimes it is difficult to find words that describes our experience.
As an experienced therapist I provide a space that allows you to bring whatever is troubling you or that you might be curious about. You might sometimes feel anxious, stuck, vulnerable or even ashamed when unable to make sense of your experience or sharing personal aspects of your life, so I am offering to support you in navigating your personal or life challenges, in a way that will allow you to deepen your understanding of yourself in relation to your circumstances as well as regain a new sense of acceptance, vitality and creativity.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
