Play therapy and creative arts counselling is about supporting the child/ teen where they are at, helping them to get to know themselves, grow in confidence, build resilience, improve emotional regulation, and developing tools that will help them for years to come.
Hi, I'm Liz and I work with children and young people at Jacaranda Therapy as an Accredited Play and Creative Arts Therapist. Childhood and adolescence can be really difficult for a number of reasons, and play therapy and creative arts counselling is an amazing way to help young people explore and express their emotions in a safe space, and find healthy coping mechanisms to help them in the future so that they can thrive and have the best outcomes possible. I use an integrative, holistic approach where young people have a choice of mediums to use including paint, sand, lego, clay, puppets, role play, sensory activities, books.

From the transition from teenager to young adult and the overwhelming changes to navigate, to mature adult issues that can stem from childhood, present day, trauma or anxiety/depression etc.
The very foundation of my work is based on trust, support and believing in you. But I also believe in a mind and body approach where we don't just work with thoughts but also work together to regulate the body and the sensations that your thoughts and emotions provoke so that we can unravel the whole picture.

Hi my work with children and young people has enabled me to adopt a common sense approach. I practise Integrative Counselling, that means I use CBT, Person Centred, Pyschodynamic, etc, concepts. Which are the building blocks of thoughts and beliefs which affect how we feel. I understand the first step in seeking counselling is hard, if you have sought support, you may not know how to effect change it’s at this point we explore choices.

I started out on my journey within the counselling, psychotherapy field when I initially worked as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team (CAMHs) Practitioner for nine years.
My name is Martina. I am an accredited Interpersonal Psychotherapist. I also offer Animal Assisted therapy (AAT) with my therapy dog Freud. This therapy can help you to connect with the work. Interpersonal Psychotherapy helps people to overcome symptoms of low mood, depression by working on the relational difficulties that may be impacting how you feel. This could be when you have lost someone close to you or when you have experienced a significant change. It may be if you are in conflict with another person or perhaps your relationships feel unfulfilling or maintaining them is hard. We can work through these difficulties together.

Maybe your child/ teenager is acting out and you just don’t know what to do next, maybe they’ve been through a difficult experience recently or in the past and need some help processing what happened to them.
Sometimes finding the right words to communicate feelings and experiences can be just too difficult. As a Creative Arts Therapist I can help your child and or teenager to express themselves, at their own pace, through the use of art, play, clay, sand tray and other therapeutic interventions, which can have a profound effect for resolving difficult issues

My specialisms include supporting adolescent mental health, those exploring identity whether ethnicity or gender, those who have been traumatised by any form of abuse.
Have you ever wished you could say how you really felt, and that someone would take the time to listen to you? Perhaps you have kept your thoughts and feelings to yourself through fear of being put down, judged, or laughed at? Or maybe you put your problems aside because you feel the other person is more important? Counselling is the opportunity to sort your thoughts; gives you time to work out what you really feel, the space to consider your options, and decide what you feel is best for you. People come for different reasons, but all wish the same outcomes; to be heard, be understood, feel better and find ways to enjoy their life.

I work with individuals who are experiencing a sense of being stuck in their life. They may be facing painful emotions, negative thought patterns, or behaviours that are causing difficulties in their lives. They may want to make sense of their difficulties by exploring them in the context of their whole life, thinking back to their early experiences, and how that has shaped the person they have become. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, abuse, low self-esteem, relational difficulties, spiritual and religious trauma and more.

I am qualified to work with both adults and children (10-18) When you are challenged by mental health conditions it can be hard to know what to do, or where to seek support, or even if it's possible to get better. I want you to know that there are many approaches and techniques proven to help. For parents reading this - I am also a parent of an anxious child and know first hand the impact this has on a family. I can help you help them, as well as support them to take action and reduce their anxiety.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
