Male Counselling in Hyde

I’m Jay, a therapist who celebrates authenticity, creativity and individuality. As somebody who doesn’t quite ‘fit in’, I have experienced first-hand how it feels to be held back by debilitating anxiety, fear of abandonment, rejection and low self-worth as a result of societal messages that are all-too-often received. Feeling confused, doubtful and uncertain lead me to get the help I needed, recognising the value this brings to people's livelihood and encouraging me to give what I had received.

I have a wealth of experience in lots of different areas - I worked in education for a number of years, as a counsellor and mentor to teaching staff and students and worked in the financial service industry before changing careers to counselling and psychotherapy. Having struggled with poor mental health myself and receiving therapy as a result, I can totally understand the nerves and anxiety that you may have before you embark on your therapeutic journey but you have nothing to fear.

Having been in practice for over thirty years, I know that no one REALLY wants to come and see me. I can seem like a last resort. I'm the person you come to when no-one else will do ……and, you have to pay me! You've reached a point where you have to talk to someone; someone who will understand the gravity of your situation. Someone who will take you and your experience of life seriously. Counselling and Psychotherapy; .... this is my job; what I do for a living; have conversations with people, be with them, helping them through times of difficulty, doubt, uncertainty and despair. Like walking a tightrope, it’s a risky business!

Liam Kernan Therapy for Men seeks to encourage men to talk about their thoughts and feelings, in a safe space, non-judgmentally and without prejudice.
Liam uses a person-centred, humanistic, emotional therapeutic counselling approach that motivates a client to reflect on their emotional responses to situations, relay them back to a previous time in their lives, to work out the ‘blocks’ to moving forward and, over time, to heal any emotional pain and distress.

Not as sure of yourself as you used to be, not feeling good about how your life or relationships have turned out, yearning for something but not sure what that is or just recognising that you no longer want to put up with the feelings, thoughts or that way your body feels. These kinds of experiences are a part what it is to be human and when we're ready to change, it's good to have help. With me its a collaborative effort in which I learn about you and you find out more about yourself; what you want, what's blocking that and how you might resolve those blocks, make changes and realise more of your potential.

I have extensive experience working with clients presenting with a wide range of issues: anxiety and stress management, depression, trauma recovery, self-esteem and confidence building, relationship issues, life transitions and personal growth, men and male anger, sport psychotherapy.
We are more than what has happened to us, the central question is: 'who do you want to become?' Being able to move from patterns of behaviour rooted in the past, into the way we want to be in the here and now, is a deeply profound and personal journey for us. Drawing from Transactional Analysis, my work involves recognising the creative ways we adapt to overcome difficult or painful experiences, working with clients to facilitate change and helping them to re-write their stories using learner strategies for living.

Perhaps you are experiencing stress, low-self esteem, the effects of trauma, bereavement or depression. Maybe you feel that something isn't quite 'right'. If so, psychotherapy could be used to help you gain self-acceptance, and a deeper understanding of what makes you 'tick' and what doesn't. Psychotherapy is typically a weekly meeting of fifty minutes, often over a medium to long term. With time and commitment, we aim to build what may be called a 'therapeutic alliance' that allows you to feel able to safely explore and eventually understand and come to terms with difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences both current and past.

What do you need? It is sometimes helpful to ask yourself - "What are my main goals as I go for counselling? What is important to me right now? How would I like to change?" Often all someone needs is some quality time and space to be able to be themselves, and be heard - not feeling judged no matter what they say, and feel some compassion from somebody who cares. In the busy and sometimes harsh world in which we live, I provide that space for you to come as you are, work with your expressed goals, rediscover a new way forward, and deal with the problems you are experiencing. Often people find a positive change in this scenario.

Everyone faces challenges and difficulties. Sometimes these feel too much to sort out on your own. You may be anxious, feel depressed, lonely or stuck in some way. You may have a feeling that something isn't right, or that you keep repeating experiences in relationships you would like to move beyond. Maybe something specific has happened that you need support with. You may be experiencing loss on a number of levels. If so, you are not alone. These experiences are what most people I work with bring to therapy. I would like to explore how I may be able to help.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
