Hi, I’m Helen. I’m a Clinical Psychologist. I currently specialise in working with parents and parents-to-be. The challenges of modern parenting are wide ranging. Many parents experience low mood, isolation, overwhelm or stress. We are led to believe that becoming a parent is a natural and joyful experience. But parenthood often brings a host of other experiences, such as rage, guilt, or grief. Mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD are also relatively common, yet it can feel like you’re the only one.

I am best suited to those who want to understand themselves and those around them - or to understand what has happened to them. This inquiry is often prompted by some degree of difficulty; illness, loss, trauma, breakdown etc. but it can equally arise out of a pervading sense of depression, purposelessness or malaise about life. When one has some understanding of oneself and how a situation came about then life becomes much easier to navigate - an adventure even. Every situation, every person, every path, is unique and so every therapy is entirely individual.

I work with adults living with the effects of trauma, including dissociation, shutdown, relationship difficulties, and persistent patterns that can remain hard to shift. Some difficulties do not immediately appear trauma-related, yet may reflect adaptations such as anxiety, over-functioning, disconnection, or difficulty feeling safe with others. Therapy can help strengthen stability, deepen understanding, and support more lasting, meaningful change.

Many people who seek counselling or psychotherapy have found themselves experiencing relationship problems or emotional difficulties, however, therapy can also benefit those who are curious about themselves and wish to engage in therapy for personal growth.

I believe that each person is unique. Therefore, therapy needs to be tailored to the individual. Some people may prefer an open space for them to talk, taking the time to reflect on their experiences, whereas others may need something more structured, with the hope of learning effective coping strategies. Some may want a bit of both. There is not a one size fits all. I draw from evidence-based modalities of therapy, such as CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, and Person-Centered to create a therapeutic plan tailored to the client and their goals. I also offer neurodevelopmental and psychological assessments, such as ADHD.

It's completely natural to feel some apprehension, fear or anxiety when considering starting therapy. In our first session you'll have the opportunity to ask questions about the process and my way of working. It'll also be an opportunity for you to go into more detail about why you’ve decided to come to see me and what you hope to get out of it.

Have you ever considered therapy intensives/retreats? You may be exhausted from trying to cope, repeating the same patterns, or feeling like nothing you try brings real relief. You want to feel like yourself again — calmer, clearer, more connected — and you’re craving a therapy experience that actually moves things forward. Whether you’re carrying trauma, anxiety, heartbreak, burnout, or relationship pain, you’re looking for something deeper and more transformative than “just talking.” You want lasting change, not more waiting.

My clinical experience encompasses many years working in a mental health setting and private practice dealing with a broad range of symptoms including, but not limited to, chronic trauma, loss or abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, marital difficulties, child-parent conflicts, self-harm, bi-polar disorder, addiction and border-line states – to name just some of the presenting issues.
Psychotherapy isn’t always about words because at times it can be difficult to talk. My practice incorporates the use of creative methods to aid the expression of feelings and imagery.

FAQ - Marriage Counselling
What issues does marriage counselling help with?
Marriage counselling can address common relationship concerns, including ongoing conflict, communication challenges, emotional distance, or difficulty making decisions together. It may also be helpful for couples who are not currently experiencing major problems but want to prepare for future life changes. For more specific concerns affecting one individual in the relationship, such as trauma, depression, or significant substance use concerns, individual therapy may be more appropriate than marriage counselling.

When is the right time to start marriage counselling?
There is no single “right” time to start marriage counselling, but certain signs may suggest that counselling could be helpful. For example, a couple may benefit from counselling if many conversations end in conflict, if negative interactions are becoming more frequent, or if relationship stress is affecting other areas of life, such as sleep, work, parenting, or friendships. Some couples also seek counselling proactively. Premarital counselling, for instance, allows couples to discuss communication styles, finances, family dynamics, and future goals before getting married. Other couples may start counselling before a major life change, such as becoming parents, relocating, or navigating a stressful career transition.

Is marriage counselling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Marriage counselling may still help even if one partner is more hesitant to attend, as long as both people are ultimately willing to participate in sessions. Once counselling is underway, the more hesitant partner may become more open to sessions that can strengthen the relationship and build coping skills and communication strategies. If one partner refuses to attend, individual therapy may still help the other partner understand their needs, set boundaries, and decide how to approach the relationship.

Is online marriage counselling as effective as in-person?
There are differing opinions on the best format for marriage counselling. While some studies show that online marriage counselling can be as effective as in-person counselling, some argue that in-person counselling is more effective because it allows the therapist to better pick up on context and body language cues. In addition, in-person counselling may be a better fit for couples who are working through high-conflict issues. Ultimately, the “best” format depends on the couple’s specific needs and concerns.

What is faith-based marriage counselling and how is it different?
Faith-based marriage counselling incorporates a couple’s religious or spiritual beliefs into counselling. It may be a good fit for couples who want to discuss their relationship, values, and marriage within the context of their faith. For example, Christian marriage counselling may appeal to couples who want a counsellor familiar with Christian beliefs about marriage. Other forms of faith-based counselling may incorporate Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or other religious perspectives into sessions.

How much does marriage counselling cost and is it covered by insurance?
Marriage counselling is usually paid for privately in Great Britain, rather than through the NHS, and sessions often cost around £60 to £120 or more. Fees depend on location, with costs generally higher in the London area, as well as counsellor experience, session length, and practice setting. However, lower-cost options may be available through sliding scale fees, which adjust the cost of counselling based on income, as well as through community clinics or non-profit organisations that offer reduced-cost services.
