I remember the first time I sought out therapist, how daunting it was, and that was after acknowledging within myself I wasn't happy with how my life was working out. The word "Autopilot" comes to mind. This is a troubling time, and then faces the challenge of choosing the right person. I understand your struggles to get this far, and commend your effort so far. It is also important to note the relationship between the therapist and client, which is where the work is done. Choosing the right person, with the right empathy is so important, and you may not get this right first time. So lets take a leap of faith and start here.

The decision to have counselling is a really brave one, and it might be difficult to know if it’s the right time for you. You can have counselling for all sorts of reasons, and there’s no such thing as a right or wrong one. You might be feeling overwhelmed or anxious; perhaps you’ve experienced a bereavement or a relationship breakdown, or you might not know what the reason is, and that is okay. Sometimes therapy is difficult, and it can bring up things that are hard to face, but you don’t have to do so alone.

Hello, for many people getting in touch with a stranger to talk about the feelings that you are experiencing is a daunting thought and also the hardest part. Once you have made that decision I will try to make the process as easy as possible. I work with adults and teenagers and I can offer you a safe and comfortable space to help you make sense of your thoughts and feelings in a non judgemental environment. Therapy isn't about blaming yourself or passing responsibility it is about working together with another individual to see how you can make positive changes in your life and move forward in the way that is right for you.

I understand how daunting the idea of therapy can be. It takes great courage to take that first step to reach out and ask for help. I believe that the therapeutic journey can be an amazing, enriching, life-changing experience which helps us to make sense of ourselves, identify blocks to change and start to make small changes that can make a big difference to our life. No issue is "too small" or "unimportant". So, whatever you are struggling with, talking really can help.

Often when faced with difficulties in life, everything can seem so overwhelming. With the never ending pressure to always be doing, it can seem impossible to get back on track. When racing to keep up with a fast pace life often our emotions are not dealt with but instead bottled up within us. I work with clients on a range of problems they may be facing by offering a space where they can sow down and check in.

Acknowledging that you need to talk to someone else other than a family member or a friend is the first step, which can be very challenging. I understand it takes courage to share your vulnerable parts with someone you don’t know but I also believe that it can be very powerful, and a life changing experience. In my work I provide a space, where you can discover things about yourself you perhaps haven’t been aware of before. I am passionate about connecting with an inner child we sometimes dismiss or forget about due to demands, and responsibilities that life brings.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
