Life can be difficult, unpredictable and chaotic. Sometimes we can believe that we are 'doomed' to a life we must just 'get' through, and we can feel overwhelmed, anxious and lacking in self confidence . Or we get stuck in repetitive patterns in our relationships or career that continue to make us miserable. If you feel unable or unsure how to make the changes you want to make, I can support you to free yourself from the grip of anxiety, help you to build your confidence and self esteem and enable you to feel more motivated, connected and fulfilled in yourself, your life and your relationship with others.

I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and work on the premise that there is more to be known about each of us than we might be aware of. My approach is to try and understand how you experience the world and others. As we get to know each other, we will find a way of working together that identifies your struggles and the choices you have in relation to those. I work with the whole person, not with a collection of symptoms. I believe that while your symptoms are important, they are not the whole truth about who you are. The aim of psychoanalytic psychotherapy is to offer you choices and freedom about how you live your life.

The idea of starting therapy may be overwhelming. You may be feeling anxious, depressed or lost, and not knowing how you got to where you are now. I aim to listen to you share your problems, stories and experiences. I am interested in what you have to say and understand how difficult it may be for you to share your feelings with others, especially if they involve traumatic experiences. I work relationally, meaning that I am invested in supporting you to achieve your goals.

I am a psychotherapist and group analyst and have been a therapist for nearly 30 years in many different settings. In my approach, I am interested in making connections between experiences and difficulties in the present, with events and relationships from the past. In my experience, difficulties people experience as adults can often be part of a repeated pattern. I will be curious about relationships in your life but also the way you relate to yourself and to others. This will include how it is in the therapy relationship - whether individually or group.

My clients have been of all ages and backgrounds. The commonality is the need to find practical and positive solutions to managing complicated emotions. By setting realistic and achievable goals, together, my clients and I forge a path forward for them, learning new thinking skills as we go, alongside home progress tasks and behavioural work too. It's a very collaborative experience and one which is powered by my clients' desire to change. I support people living through periods of anxiety or depression, relationship issues and self-development. An initial assessment session will help us decide if this therapy is right for you.

At times life can be difficult. Sometimes it may feel like life isn’t moving forward and you keep repeating the same old patterns and nothing changes. You may be dwelling on the past or worried about the present or the future. You may just be in a place of general unhappiness where you just don’t know what to do. In developing a better understanding of ourselves, increasing our awareness, and learning about how we operate as people we are able to make fresh choices, see new perspectives, change things, move forward and find our full potential. I believe in peoples capacity to thrive when they are given the right conditions to do so.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
