My work includes managing impact of past trauma in the present, men's and women's issues, identity, self esteem and confidence, communication and assertiveness, different stages of parenting , relationships, attachment and connection.
Hello I’m Selene. I have 20 years of experience as a counsellor. I am a warm and open-minded person with a good sense of humour. I offer a welcoming and confidential space where we can together create an empowering therapeutic relationship. I believe you are an expert in your own life and my role is to support and challenge you reconnecting with yourself and your strengths. Counselling is an opportunity to give yourself the time and space to imagine who you want to be. Sometimes fear and shame make us stuck and disconnected from others and not able to ask for what we want. Therapy can help you free yourself and open connection.

As a CBT therapist and midwife I really understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their anxiety, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent . You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

Life presents a multitude of events, challenges and obstacles, that at times can be difficult to surmount. Each person meets these with different perspectives and emotions; these differences are part of what makes us human. Another vital part of being human is the need for connection and to share what we are experiencing, to help make sense of our existence. But if you're feeling overwhelmed and resources are depleted, it can be hard to find space to reflect and find a way through.

It may be that you don’t know where to turn. I am a highly experienced Child Psychotherapist. I offer therapy and mental health support for children and young people and consultation to the people who care for them. Therapy provides a safe space to explore issues that might be troubling someone, be it anxiety, stress and unhappiness; separation and loss; worries about school; gender and sexuality; low self esteem or any number of other things.

Thanks for stopping at my profile. I'm an experienced and dedicated psychodynamic therapist and I work primarily with adults in my private practice in Hove. I am very passionate about psychodynamic therapy as I've had the first-hand experience of how it can help people overcome and resolve a variety of issues, from mild to severe. Psychodynamic therapy is an in-depth psychological intervention which is explorative in nature and focused on free expression. Often open-ended, it offers rewards for those who undertake it that can be life-changing, including a robust sense of self, easier relationships and an ability to live free of fear

At times life can be difficult. Sometimes it may feel like life isn’t moving forward and you keep repeating the same old patterns and nothing changes. You may be dwelling on the past or worried about the present or the future. You may just be in a place of general unhappiness where you just don’t know what to do. In developing a better understanding of ourselves, increasing our awareness, and learning about how we operate as people we are able to make fresh choices, see new perspectives, change things, move forward and find our full potential. I believe in peoples capacity to thrive when they are given the right conditions to do so.

At different stages in our lives, we encounter difficulties that prevent us from fully enjoying life. It can be anything from anxiety and depression, to the loss of a person (through death or relationship breakdown), to deeply rooted emotional issues (such as low self-esteem or inability to form relationships). Other times, we are unable to fully explain what is troubling us - we just know that something is. Asking for help can be difficult - finding the right kind of help and support can be more challenging. With each person and difficulty being unique, I tailor my approach to suit each client's needs and communication style.

Taking the first step to talk to someone can feel difficult. Perhaps you're clear about how you feel or maybe you're confused and it's difficult to put your feelings into words. You may have felt this way for a while and you're not sure why. Maybe you're in a difficult relationship or you feel that your relationships don't last. Many of us struggle to make a life transition or cope with a change or loss in our lives. Perhaps you feel your life is lacking meaning. I can help you make sense of these experiences by understanding their meaning for you and help you gain a greater understanding of yourself in the process.

Life can be difficult, unpredictable and chaotic. Sometimes we can believe that we are 'doomed' to a life we must just 'get' through, and we can feel overwhelmed, anxious and lacking in self confidence . Or we get stuck in repetitive patterns in our relationships or career that continue to make us miserable. If you feel unable or unsure how to make the changes you want to make, I can support you to free yourself from the grip of anxiety, help you to build your confidence and self esteem and enable you to feel more motivated, connected and fulfilled in yourself, your life and your relationship with others.

Deciding to seek therapy can seem like a daunting process. Not only are you bravely taking steps to face the challenges in your life, you are choosing to share your unique story, perhaps for the first time, with a complete stranger. You may be experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, or another form of distress in the complex spectrum of human suffering, or maybe you want to discover more of who you are. Whilst not aiming to solve your problems, I hope to help you develop greater self-awareness, understanding and acceptance, developing resilience, uncovering new meaning and potential for change.

I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and work on the premise that there is more to be known about each of us than we might be aware of. My approach is to try and understand how you experience the world and others. As we get to know each other, we will find a way of working together that identifies your struggles and the choices you have in relation to those. I work with the whole person, not with a collection of symptoms. I believe that while your symptoms are important, they are not the whole truth about who you are. The aim of psychoanalytic psychotherapy is to offer you choices and freedom about how you live your life.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioural problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilised, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
