Whilst I work with people from across all parts of society, my specialism is in LGBTQ lives, particularly gender.
Hello I'm Ellis Johnson, a fully qualified psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counsellor and a registered member of BACP. I have 5 years experience as an advocate, counsellor and trainer in the voluntary sector and I understand that for many people, asking for help can feel unfamiliar and anxiety-provoking. I also understand with the right support, counselling can be a transformative and validating experience that can make us feel more connected to ourselves and the world around us.

My specialism lies in working with issues realted to being LGBTQ .
Counselling can be an exciting and challenging journey, dealing with what's happening right now or looking at those important moments from your past. I will support you on this journey to understand yourself better, giving you the potential to grow and develop self-awareness. You and I will look at how you think, feel and behave, which can give you focus on which parts of yourself you want to develop, and which parts you can use to support the work you do. This is very important and useful on the counselling journey. You will have the space and time, to work through and develop your understanding of yourself, to feel more at ease.

I am genuinely interested in the broad range of human experience, and my ambition is to support you as you process your story and feelings at a pace that feels comfortable. I currently have a few slots available for new clients. I am a Queer therapist and I have been working with the LGBTQ + community for over 5 years. I can offer you a safe and non-judgmental space for us to explore what is troubling you. Most of us experience mental health challenges at some point in our lives, and there is still so much pressure to appear like we have it all together. I currently work with clients aged 18 and over, both online and in-person in offices near central Brighton.

Am LGBTQ + and kink friendly and aware.
If you've got problems, I can help.. As a therapist I am happiest when I am genuinely able to make a difference to someone and help them feel better. I have had a great deal of experience of working with many different people, each one of them with their own unique story, and their own way of seeing the world, each one of them also with the problems that sometimes arise for all of us as human beings trying to live the best we can. Maybe you feel anxious and don't know why? Perhaps you've had things happen that are still affecting you?

I am an experienced BACP accredited psychodynamic counsellor, currently based in Phoenix Therapy Practice. I believe that no issue is too small nor too great to bring to therapy – if it causes you pain, you will benefit from opening up about it in the long run. I believe everyone’s internal world needs to be approached with curiosity and openness. My approach is rooted in traditional psychoanalysis but progressive in the way I practice it. It is suitable for adults of all ages and backgrounds and also LGBTQ /kink and poly-friendly.

I work alongside people who are dealing with all kinds of issues, including, but not limited to, anxiety, relationship issues, depression, family issues, career and life choices, affairs and betrayals, separation and divorce, abuse, anger management, bereavement, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, sex and sexuality, LGBT -related issues and stress.
Sometimes, life feels a little out of balance. It's important that we find our own answers to the things that concern us about our lives. It's also important that we find a way to do this that suits our preferences, our needs and our styles. It's vital that we find a place where we can consider those questions about our lives and the situations we find ourselves in with patience, compassion and care. Finding a counsellor or psychotherapist to be with us can bring enormous benefit during difficult times.

I also have experience working with trauma, relationships, and sexuality issues, with a particular interest in affirmative work with LGBTQ + clients.
I am a qualified and experienced Humanistic Integrative Counsellor who works with mental health challenges, emotional difficulties and interpersonal relationship issues. Being trained in an Integrative modality allows me to work with different approaches depending on the client's needs, using directive and non-directive interventions. The therapeutic work will focus on building awareness while exploring your thoughts and experiences, looking at the here and now as well as the childhood, to understand better who you are and promote change by working on acceptance.

The idea of starting therapy may be overwhelming. You may be feeling anxious, depressed or lost, and not knowing how you got to where you are now. I aim to listen to you share your problems, stories and experiences. I am interested in what you have to say and understand how difficult it may be for you to share your feelings with others, especially if they involve traumatic experiences. I work relationally, meaning that I am invested in supporting you to achieve your goals.

Hello, I’m Naomi (she/her). I know that starting your therapy journey takes courage and therefore I offer a warm, empathetic and non-judgemental space to support you in taking those first steps. An integrative approach allows me to tailor the therapy to each individual that comes to see me, however I do primarily pull from humanistic and neurobiological theoretical viewpoints. My practice has robust foundations in trauma-informed approaches, placing the safety and empowerment of all clients as the priority.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
