I offer individual therapy to clients who are struggling with a wide range of issues (but not limited to) depression , anxiety and PTSD.
Should I go to therapy? This question may take some time to contemplate before you decide that you are ready for counselling or psychological therapy. When any type of mental health or emotional concern affects your daily life and function, therapy can help you work through the difficulties you are experiencing. You do not have to be diagnosed with a mental health problem to benefit from therapy. Many people in therapy seek help to talk through life challenges such as relationship problems, grief, parenting difficulties, or family struggles.

Deciding to seek therapy can seem like a daunting process. Not only are you bravely taking steps to face the challenges in your life, you are choosing to share your unique story, perhaps for the first time, with a complete stranger. You may be experiencing depression , anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, or another form of distress in the complex spectrum of human suffering, or maybe you want to discover more of who you are. Whilst not aiming to solve your problems, I hope to help you develop greater self-awareness, understanding and acceptance, developing resilience, uncovering new meaning and potential for change.

It could be you have recently hit a tough time in your life and need a space to make sense of it. It might be that a relationship has become difficult; with your partner, at work with colleagues, with your children or close family members. You may be suffering symptoms of anxiety and depression and you are finding it harder to function in daily life. It may be that you are transitioning from one stage to another in your life; leaving home, starting a family or approaching retirement and you need somewhere to work through some of the feelings of anxiety, fear and uncertainty that such a change can bring.

Counselling and Psychotherapy can help not only relieve symptoms like anxiety and depression , it can also truly change a person — allowing one to feel a greater sense of self-esteem and experience more enriching relationships.
Throughout my working life, I have been involved in enabling people to grow and change. In addition to working as a psychotherapist, I have a background in healthcare. I have worked in a variety of settings (including mental health and psychiatric settings), as a registered nurse and nurse Case Manager for over 25 years. I have recent experience working on the front line as a Nurse and a counsellor during the Coronavirus pandemic and understand the struggles essential staff are experiencing first hand and how this is impacting on mental health and relationships.

I’m an experienced integrative therapist working with individuals struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and relationship issues. You may feel that you are struggling with these issues alone and that you can’t talk to your partner, friends or family. You might worry that these issues keep repeating themselves and that you will always feel stuck. I work with clients to explore their current emotional concerns to understand underlying and often unseen issues. It is this process that opens up positive change.

At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed , angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
