Hello. My name is Ian and I am an addiction therapist. I've a Post Grad Diploma in Addiction Psychology & Counselling and I specialise in helping people to explore their drug and
alcohol use
in a safe and confidential, collaborative way. No judgements, just understanding. I'm in established recovery myself and I get it. It may be that you just want to cut down, get it under control, we can look at that, or things are getting a little more drastic- we can work with this too. I've years of experience, personally and therapeutically, and I know it's not as simple as just putting down the substance, there's a background we'll explore.

I have experience of working with people with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, ADHD, childhood abuse, loss, trauma, anger, drug and
alcohol use
and other addictions.
I believe that every person has their own unique story. What happens in our lives as our story unfolds shapes who we are, how we see and experience the world and how we feel about it and fit within it. Counselling can help people discover who they are, learn about their relationships, understand past events, help them get a deeper understanding of themselves, who they are and learn new ways to live their lives. Counselling can help people change from feeling that their story is being written for them and learn how to start writing it for themselves. I currently have availability to take new clients.

I’m a counselling therapist based in Hove, Brighton & Maidstone, Kent. I specialise in addiction but work with many other issues too including couples counselling. I firmly believe clients should be encouraged to shop around which is why I offer a 50% discount on the first session. We will explore & endeavour to shed new light on your way of being in the world, thus far, & how your past has informed your sense of self in the present & how you might want to enhance your life still further by bringing yourself out of the shadows & into the light? We don’t see the world as it is but as we; so who are we, really?

You can live an addiction-free life. You can live without having to hide a part of you from people all the time. You can have meaningful friendships. You can make the change that you need in order to be more confident and happy. You can learn to love yourself instead of living in shame all the time. You are not your childhood, nor your actions. You are worthy of love! I feel passionate about facilitating people to reach their potential and find their inner truth.

Sometimes having a time to stop and offload can make such a difference. All too often we carry so much extra tension and stress and lack a confidential and trusted relationship to help figure out what is going on. I have been inspired by working with many counsellors, trainers and clients by the huge changes and benefits one to one counselling can support.

If you've got problems, I can help.. As a therapist I am happiest when I am genuinely able to make a difference to someone and help them feel better. I have had a great deal of experience of working with many different people, each one of them with their own unique story, and their own way of seeing the world, each one of them also with the problems that sometimes arise for all of us as human beings trying to live the best we can. Maybe you feel anxious and don't know why? Perhaps you've had things happen that are still affecting you?

My person-centred modality carries the core belief that we are all born innately good. Things happen to us along our journey in life. Learnt behaviour and experiences shape our thoughts and feelings in our development. We can repeat our reactions to circumstances when they occur in adulthood. We can become unconscious of our behaviours because of the busy lives we lead. It's as if our experiences stick to us like "papier mache' " in the developmental years, forming a different self. This can be an uncomfortable and unwelcome reality that we want to change in adulthood or when it becomes painful, but we often do not know how to.

Sometimes life can be really hard. Everything feels like too much, and we wonder how we can keep going. We can get overwhelmed with guilt for not coping, shame for having failed in the past and we can end up not really liking ourselves very much. We might self-medicate with substances which we know don't really help, but they seem better than nothing.

Throughout my working life, I have been involved in enabling people to grow and change. In addition to working as a psychotherapist, I have a background in healthcare. I have worked in a variety of settings (including mental health and psychiatric settings), as a registered nurse and nurse Case Manager for over 25 years. I have recent experience working on the front line as a Nurse and a counsellor during the Coronavirus pandemic and understand the struggles essential staff are experiencing first hand and how this is impacting on mental health and relationships.

I have worked for the past 10 years as Family Worker and Person-Centred Counsellor and specialise in working with Parent's supporting a wide variety of issues including, fertility, loss, postnatal anxiety, pnd and birth trauma. We spend our lives trying to avoid difficult situations and distracting ourselves from painful things we wish we could just erase from our memories. Sadly, memories can’t be erased, and life is full of ups and downs. I believe that counselling is a way of freeing ourselves from these things and an opportunity to stop having to hide from the difficult memories we put so much energy into avoiding.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
