Since 1981 I have worked in several therapeutic and care settings. I formally qualified as a Counsellor in 1996. Since that time I have run several counselling services in universities and concurrently run an assessment centre for adults in employment and education with disabilities. I continue to educate myself and will always be curious and keen to learn from the world around you and me. It keeps things real and being authentic is one of my core values. A key question that I often return to is ‘what do you want more of in your life?’ so don’t be surprised if this features early in our time together!

If you've got problems, I can help.. As a therapist I am happiest when I am genuinely able to make a difference to someone and help them feel better. I have had a great deal of experience of working with many different people, each one of them with their own unique story, and their own way of seeing the world, each one of them also with the problems that sometimes arise for all of us as human beings trying to live the best we can. Maybe you feel anxious and don't know why? Perhaps you've had things happen that are still affecting you?

At different stages in our lives, we encounter difficulties that prevent us from fully enjoying life. It can be anything from anxiety and depression, to the loss of a person (through death or relationship breakdown), to deeply rooted emotional issues (such as low self-esteem or inability to form relationships). Other times, we are unable to fully explain what is troubling us - we just know that something is. Asking for help can be difficult - finding the right kind of help and support can be more challenging. With each person and difficulty being unique, I tailor my approach to suit each client's needs and communication style.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know where you can turn to talk through family issues and get some help. Often those closest to you are very involved themselves. Or you don’t want to worry them. It may be that you don’t know where to turn. I am a highly experienced Child Psychotherapist. I offer therapy and mental health support for children and young people and consultation to the people who care for them. Therapy provides a safe space to explore issues that might be troubling someone, be it anxiety, stress and unhappiness; separation and loss; worries about school; gender and sexuality; low self esteem or any number of other things.

Sometimes painful memories, strong feelings and intrusive thoughts become too overwhelming to manage. When this happens, it's not unusual to feel anxious, low in mood or just aware of feeling "stuck". You might be thinking "what's happening to me", and with no apparent answer, this can make things can feel unpleasant, destabilised or even frightening. Or you might feel that something more specific, like a bereavement, relationship breakdown or traumatic experience have made life seem more of a struggle and less of a pleasure. This is often the point when we seek help from someone.

Life can be difficult, unpredictable and chaotic. Sometimes we can believe that we are 'doomed' to a life we must just 'get' through, and we can feel overwhelmed, anxious and lacking in self confidence . Or we get stuck in repetitive patterns in our relationships or career that continue to make us miserable. If you feel unable or unsure how to make the changes you want to make, I can support you to free yourself from the grip of anxiety, help you to build your confidence and self esteem and enable you to feel more motivated, connected and fulfilled in yourself, your life and your relationship with others.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
