When relationships (business, family or personal) are troubled, we can feel anxious or depressed. Whether its lack of, ending of, difficulties with or changes in relationships, at work or home, our need for human closeness both brings pleasure and causes problems. Maybe change is driven by others, maybe you need something to change but don't know the best way to go about it. Perhaps you’re finding that you’re stuck in a destructive communication pattern and feel like you’re going round in circles. Maybe you don’t really know what you want, but would like to find out. I can help.

If the bottom has fallen out of your world due to a diagnosis or loss I'd be honoured to support you.
Coming to therapy might be a very scary and daunting thing to do, you may feel like you ‘shouldn’t’ need therapy. Perhaps you don’t understand why you feel so anxious. Difficult feelings and thoughts make daily life hard and seem to be getting worse. It might be that what other people think about you often comes first. Sometimes you don’t feel normal, as though everyone else copes 'better' with life. Maybe you suspect that you have ADHD or already have a diagnosis. You might want to understand what is going on, find healthy ways to cope with your feelings and thoughts. However it feels overwhelming to start this on your own.

My approach is human centred, compassion focused, and trauma informed. I believe that every person is shaped by their life experiences and has their own unique strengths and challenges. As such, I do not use symptom lists, diagnostic labels, or manualised treatments. If you are looking for a therapist who works in this way, I may not be the best practitioner to support your needs. We will begin by exploring together what brings you to therapy and creating a shared understanding of your unique life story. From here, we can begin to make connections between your history and your present difficulties, whatever they may be.

These days, my primary focus is grief therapy — supporting people through bereavement, loss, complicated grief, baby loss, and birth trauma.
I draw on a range of approaches, including creative media when helpful, and have trained in flash therapy (particularly effective for trauma elements within grief). Sessions are available online (many clients prefer the comfort of home via video call) or in-person at various office spaces across Teesside.

I work with the following presenting issues: anxiety and low self-esteem, complex-trauma, sexual abuse, bereavement and loss, self-harm, domestic violence, family and relational issues, depression and more.
I believe therapy gives people a regular and confidential space to talk about their worries, problems or a chance to explore more about themselves; to gain a new or different perspective. This can lead to positive and proactive changes in how they feel about themselves, their relationships, as well as future-proofing their thinking and behaviour. I am a UKCP accredited Integrative Psychotherapist and also a UKCP Accredited Integartive Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I have worked with children and adults since 2017.

I have a lot of experience working with a range of human difficulties ranging from grief and trauma to relationship problems and all forms of abuse including diagnoses such as obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, PTSD and personality disorders.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers a way of working with difficulties at depth, meaning the focus is at a conscious and an unconscious level. You can fully explore your thoughts, feelings, dreams and memories without a restrictive agenda. You will have the opportunity to think in detail about the way your past experiences have influenced your present.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
