My experience in providing counselling for a wide range of issues including stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, bullying, childhood issues, bereavement and relationship difficulties, allows me to work with adults, both male and female, as well as couples, other counsellors, and student counsellors.
Prior to counselling I was cardiac nurse and later a health visitor for children under the age of five. I also hosted a death and dying bereavement cafe at the Drighlington Health Hub prior to Covid, I plan to continue hosting this service when we able to once again gather together indoors within a group setting.

Taking the first step to seeing a Counsellor can feel really hard. Perhaps you are wondering how it could help, feeling like maybe your problems don’t qualify, or maybe they feel so big that you don’t know where to start. Have you have been trying to talk to friends or family about it but feel like they are not really listening? Or do people just want to give you advice? Being truly listened to can make the world of difference; being really heard. I know from experience that this can give us the courage to work through the things we haven’t been able to face on our own.

I wonder what brings you here today? Maybe you are at quarter or midlife and desire change or meaning. Is the pressure and strain of "doing it on your own" or "holding it all in" is getting too much? Perhaps your relationships keep following the same painful scripts- maybe another pair of eyes and compassionate presence will help? Compulsions or addictions might be offering short term relief but long term shame and anxiety- do you yearn to bring them into honest and caring dialogue? I'm ready to hear from you and about you. Taster sessions £15, ongoing fee is £50-90 (sliding scale)

You have likely arrived here because yourself or someone you know is thinking about counselling. This can be a worrying and confusing time and you may just need information about what counselling is and how you can make use of it. I chose counselling as a career as there was a time where I felt like I had no voice. I was alone with my thoughts and feelings. Having therapy, allowed me to understand how it feels to be listened to, with no judgement or a fear of being misunderstood. It gave me time, space and the confidence to open up. I want to work with others and communicate how to work on their self-love and belief in themselves.

You might feel no-one understands why you’re not ‘moving on’ after a death, divorce, or baby loss.
As an integrative counsellor, I will help you work through whatever issues you bring to our shared space, using the most appropriate therapeutic approach. I recognise that what works for one person might not work for another, and no two people feel the same about what might appear to be a similar ‘thing’ on the outside. After all, you are the expert on you. You have taken the first step, by recognising that you need some help. My practice is called Elpis Therapy - indicating something we all need at times of emotional distress: ‘hope’.

Bereavement Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
