Most people at some point in their lives will struggle with painful feelings or may feel overwhelmed by past or present experiences. These can make us feel lost, anxious, confused, helpless, distressed or angry, sometimes without us knowing why. Counselling is also not just for supporting people through a crisis. Many people come to counselling to explore and get a better understanding of themselves and their lives. Whatever you are experiencing, it can be difficult to explain how we feel to the people who are closest to us. Sometimes it is easier to talk to someone who is separate from your everyday life.

I work with a wide range of clients, those who are “wearing a mask”, facing adversity, struggling with past trauma, loss of agency, identity, or self-destructive patterns. They feel disconnected, reactive, and uncertain about their future. They need a structured approach to rebuild trust in themselves, regain control, and find meaning in navigating their suffering. Their goal is growth, not just recovery. They want clarity, resilience, and a sense of purpose because they refuse to be defined by their past. My therapy focuses on reintegrating the divided self, fostering agency, and helping clients transform pain into strength.

Hi, I’m Emily. Welcome to the world of counselling, and welcome back if you’ve been here before. It would be a privilege to work with you. I am an integrative counsellor. This means our work will draw on a variety of counselling techniques such as IFS, CBT and creative methods. At my core I practice Gestalt therapy; a relational approach dealing with the 'here and now'. We can discuss any particular interest in a modality during our initial call. I believe the relationship is the most important part of the therapeutic process and so our sessions would be client-lead whilst bringing my authentic self as well.

Matt is a nationally recognised expert in child behavioural problems, attachment and parenting as well as the mental health needs of adopted, fostered and care experienced children.
Matt is especially interested in the way in which child factors contribute to parenting challenges and how evidence-based approaches can be modified to take these into account. While standard evidence-based parenting programs work well for many families, research shows a failure to assess child factors can undermine their effectiveness for some families.

Helping your child who struggles with anxiety, aggression, ADHD or behaviour issues requires a confident, clear approach. With so much information out there, it can be hard to know where to turn. When you are ready, I will offer you a regular session time, and provide weekly practice tasks for you and your child to complete at home. Together we will develop an action plan, and work towards you and your child's goals.

What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
