I am passionate in helping you to live a harmonious and fulfilling life in the modern world. This means helping you to cope with difficult challenges in your life, whether these are due to circumstances or specific mental health problems. I respect each person as an individual and plan treatment accordingly using evidence based interventions. Primarily, I want you to feel safe and comfortable when talking about sensitive and personal matters. In addition, privacy, openness, honesty and respect are important therapy values to me. Outside of therapy, I enjoy gardening, and country walks to enjoy nature and the changing seasons.

Feeling stuck can be so disempowering, and taking the courage to begin the process of counselling can feel like a giant leap, yet it takes just a small step to reach out and make contact. If you feel you need a safe place to explore your issues and associated feelings in a non-judgmental environment then counselling is for you. We, as human beings, tend to look for and repeat patterns of being, and create coping mechanisms that at one time, may have been useful but have now become potentially destructive to our general wellbeing, as well as the significant relationships in our lives, careers and hopes for the future.

In my experience, people make the decision to come to counselling for many reasons, and I understand that it can feel very daunting to embark on a journey of this kind. I have a number of years experience of working with individuals with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, stress, anger, loss and bereavement, addictive behaviours, as well as family/work/relationship issues. I believe that just being able to talk about your thoughts and feelings can often bring great relief, and this experience can be life changing.

All of us at some point will have times where we feel overwhelmed with the inevitable uncertainties of life which if pushed aside can so easily lead to disconnection, loss of purpose, enjoyment of life or fear for the future. Sometimes, we tell ourselves that our troubling thoughts or upsetting feelings are not important enough to bother others, they will eventually disappear, or that people cope with worse. Or perhaps, the opposite of this, that the impact of life experiences has resulted in distressing thoughts and feelings that are too great a burden for others to bear.

Addiction, mental health issues and distress, at some point in life we can all suffer from any of these issues. You are not alone, and you don't have to suffer needlessly. Like many people I've faced my own fair share of these problems and found myself engaging in therapy that changed my life. I believe that everybody can obtain long-term happiness through the self-awareness that therapy offers. We can often tell ourselves that we are different, broken some how, that therapy won't work. However, there is light at the end of every tunnel and together we can take that journey to over-come any issues and create a life of possibilities.

I specialise in working with couples and individuals, and regularly work with clients in areas including: communication, affairs and infidelity, blended families, bereavement (loss and grief), embedded trauma, depression and anxiety. In my practice, I endeavour to work with clients in an empathic, collaborative and non-judgemental way. My integrated approach uses systemic theory (including exploring your thought processes and present situation) and psychodynamic theory (historical exploration linking to unconscious thoughts and behaviour). I also apply aspects of emotionally-focused therapy (EFT); and trauma focused therapies.

Whatever your reasons for seeking therapy, I believe it is paramount for you to feel safe, heard and understood. You may know what you need or you may be more uncertain. No matter, it is your unique perspective and experience which is important. Having the space to explore this, free of judgement, can build self-awareness and bring clarity.

Solution Focused Brief (SFBT) Counsellors

How does solution-focused therapy work?

The treatment works by helping a client notice which behaviours and thoughts have positive results on their lives and building a plan around how to maximise these strengths. Practitioners of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) believe that individuals already have the experience, wisdom, and resilience to create change in their lives, but may need a guide to help them realise which changes to make and how to make them.

Is solution-focused brief therapy evidence-based?

Yes. Solution-focused brief therapy has been extensively studied, and researchers find strong evidence that it’s an effective treatment for many behavioural and psychological concerns. This may be due to the uplifting nature and practicality of the treatment, which allows patients to employ strategies to reach their goals that are incremental and achievable.

How long does solution-focused brief therapy last?

Solution-focused brief therapy, as the name implies, is brief. The timeline may vary from person to person, given the challenges they face and their situation in life, but treatment is typically complete within four to eight sessions. This therapy type is a pragmatic one: it’s concerned more with “how” problems can be addressed and improved than getting to the root of “why” they exist in the first place.

Is solution-focused brief therapy a type of cognitive behavioural therapy?

Solution-focused brief therapy is related to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)in that both are pragmatic approaches that deal less with gaining a full understanding of the cause of a mental health problem and more with creating plans for how to cope with these problems and improve an individual’s day-to-day life. They are distinct, however, in that SFBT emphasises building on strengths and resources, while CBT focuses on changing negative thoughts and behaviours.
