I opened Ataraxia counselling at the beginning of 2018. Just over a year in and the practice is growing faster than expected. I work with clients with all types of issues and personalities. My experience so far is predominanty mental health as i have worked for Mind in mid Herts and addiction as i also work for ADAS a drug and alcohol agency. If i was to say i had a niche it would be that i can make shy clients feel at ease early on using a relational supportive style of counselling. I would love to welcome new clients to Ataraxia. Look forward to hearing from you. Mark

I am a sensitive, thoughtful and experienced counsellor. Modern life can be complicated and stressful. This may leave people feeling stuck or with a sense of loss of meaning in their lives, and seeking a greater sense of fulfillment. My practice originates from a psychodynamic perspective, which explores your relationship with yourself, others and the world you live in. You may have a specific problem which you are struggling with, e.g. bereavement or relationship issues, or there may be less specific or easily-identified causes contributing to painful and troubling feelings such as
anxiety
, depression or helplessness.

You may have found yourself here as a result of wanting help with things that feel overwhelming right now. Perhaps your relationship isn't going in the direction you would like or work is becoming difficult to face. Maybe you have suffered a bereavement or you have a daily struggle with
anxiety
or depression. Whatever your battle may be, counselling is a way to gain support and a deeper understanding for what is impacting you and your life. I mainly use the psychodynamic modality, however I draw on a range of theoretical perspectives, depending on what is explored.

I understand that to make that first call or email for counselling can be extremely difficult, the fact you’re here means you’ve taken the first step towards making positive changes in your life. Are you stuck, feeling lost or alone, afraid or upset? I aim to help you to make sense of your
fears
, worries and anxieties. Many people find it easier to talk to someone who they see as being separate to their life rather than friends or family. I can help you make sense of experiences of the past and resolve complicated feelings linked to these. Therapy can be used to better yourself, allowing you to take complete control of your life.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
