Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counselling in Hinckley
Hi I'm Helen,
Feeling stuck in anxiety, trauma, or intrusive thoughts? We can work through it together, at your pace.
I work with adults who feel overwhelmed by past experiences, anxiety, or patterns that don’t seem to shift. This might include trauma, PTSD, difficult relationships, OCD, or intrusive thoughts that feel hard to manage. You may find yourself overthinking, on edge, or disconnected, unsure why certain things still affect you so strongly. Together, we begin to make sense of what’s happening, gently process what feels unresolved, and find a steadier, more manageable way forward.

Would you like to explore things that may be getting in the way of having an improved quality of life and learn practical tools to help you and your child?
I specialise in working with young people and families, either as individuals or as a family. I am keen to embrace your strengths and resources to help overcome life's obstacles.

I work with women who are finding pregnancy or new motherhood harder than they expected - not in the “normal hard” way people talk about, but in a way that feels isolating and stuck.
Maybe your birth left you shaken and you’re still processing it months later. Or you’re pregnant after loss and each milestone brings dread instead of joy. Perhaps fear of birth is affecting your life now. People may say “stay positive” or “enjoy this time,” but inside you feel exhausted, worried, or just getting through the days.
I specialise in birth trauma, pregnancy anxiety and fear of childbirth and can help you feel more grounded and present.

Life can be challenging. It can be difficult opening up to someone about the worst that's happened to us, about the parts of ourselves we struggle with. For some dealing with trauma can impact how we treat others, having negative impacts on relationships & life. I’ve worked for over 25 years with those who’ve experienced complex trauma: who’ve lived/worked in conflict zones; been abused by family; struggle to emotionally regulate; have been abusive & with relationship breakdown. As a couple it’s important to feel the therapist you choose is able to work with you around your relationship.

I often use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and find it particularly effective with clients who are anxious, have low self esteem and experiencing grief/loss.
Have you been thinking about counselling for some time? Maybe you’ve been putting it off, because you hope that things will get better, or that your problems aren’t important enough to seek help. Taking that first step can be really difficult. Finding the right therapist can be even harder. You might feel anxious, confused and intimidated by the choice. I understand the overwhelm and invite you to take that first step with me.
If you have racing thoughts, worry excessively, or often feel “not good enough”, you are probably looking for support and coping strategies to help you live a more meaningful life.

You're holding everything together — work, relationships, responsibilities — and doing it well enough that nobody would guess the effort it actually takes. But privately something won't shift. The anxiety that appears for no obvious reason. The relationships that follow the same exhausting patterns. The flatness that success hasn't touched.
You've probably tried to address it. Got some tools, felt better for a while. But something underneath keeps reasserting itself — and you're right that it does.
I've spent 30 years helping people understand what's actually driving their experience, not just manage the symptoms.

If you’re caught in cycles of anxiety, overwhelm, self-doubt, or people-pleasing, this work helps you understand why — and how to change it.
We start by looking at where you are now: what’s not working, what’s keeping you stuck, and where you’d like to go. From there, we create a practical, personalised plan using brain-based tools, emotional insight, and evidence-informed strategies to shift the patterns underneath the surface to reduce anxiety and overwhelm, build self-confidence and clarity, break unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns.
This isn’t about quick fixes or crisis support. It’s steady, supported change.

Welcome to my profile - My name is Cat and I'm an expert in developmental trauma and personality difficulties. These can lead to a range of mental health needs that I can support you with (like anxiety, anger, risky behaviours, psychosis...) and also unhelpful coping behaviours, such as self-harm and suicidal thoughts, substance use, relationship struggles, and on. My approach is to understand the 'why', to get the root cause of difficult experiences so that we know how to improve it. We will work on identifying unhelpful coping strategies and replace these with healthy ones so we can work on developing the life that you want.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
