I am trained primarily in both Psychodynamic and Person-centred therapy, and my aim is the marriage of these two approaches to provide a safe, warm, non-judgemental space to get to the root of your issue.
Hi, I'm glad you’re here. I work with people who are looking for a space where they can show up exactly as they are—no masks, no judgment. Tend Counselling is my private practice that I run with my colleague. I'm Chloe, and I'm neurodiversity-affirming and LGBTQ+ inclusive, and I take an integrative approach that pulls from different therapeutic models, such as Psychodynamic and person-centred, to best fit your unique needs, experiences, and goals.

I'm Stu, the Lead Therapist and Founder SJR Therapy. I’m passionate about mental health and firmly believe that counselling can change a persons life. I have a wealth of experience in lots of different areas - I worked in education for a number of years, as a counsellor and mentor to teaching staff and students and worked in the financial service industry before changing careers to counselling and psychotherapy. Having struggled with poor mental health myself and receiving therapy as a result, I can totally understand the nerves and anxiety that you may have before you embark on your therapeutic journey but you have nothing to fear.

In my client work, I draw on my background in psychology, philosophy and systemic therapy, as well as psychodynamic therapy and attachment theory which looks at the unconscious relational processes between us and finds links between what you're experiencing in the present and your early childhood and family experiences. I have worked for over 2 years at a domestic abuse refuge with clients facing physical and emotional violence, legacy issues of self-worth, trauma, anxiety, guilt, grief, and relationship challenges affecting family, future partners, and friendships.
Dealing with the fundamental challenges of life can be difficult; work, family, relationships, anxieties, depression and many other issues that can have a detrimental impact on your well-being. Reaching out for therapy is the start of your journey and together we will address those issues. I will support you along the way to realise the harmony and contentment you so deserve. My purpose is to steer you to a place where you can feel at ‘one’ within yourself and your world, making sense of your experiences, and recognising how your interaction with others impacts not only what you feel, but importantly the way you respond.

With my brother diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia nearly 30 years ago, I have personal experience of the family sacrifices and struggles related to the pain and stigma of mental illness. Having since, committing my life to the improvement of people’s emotional fitness and mental resilience, with support from organisations such as SANE and MIND, my own journey has allowed me to discover the true benefits of therapy first-hand. Personal therapy is proving invaluable for people to manage certain difficult or crisis situations in their lives and so transform their problems into major opportunities for personal growth.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand, or unsure why certain emotions keep showing up no matter how hard you try to push them away. Perhaps you react in ways that don’t feel like “you,” or you’re finding it difficult to stay calm, motivated, or connected to others. Many of the people I work with describe anxiety, stress, anger, low motivation, or a general sense of feeling lost. What they want most is clarity, relief, and a way to understand themselves better, not quick fixes, but real, lasting change. They want to feel more grounded, more connected, and more like themselves again.

Hello! In some respects, because you're reading this, you’ve already made the biggest step. I understand starting therapy can be scary, but recognising you need some support is often the first step in the journey to become the best version of you. Life can be tough...! You may be at a point in your life when you feel stuck, and unable to move on, and don’t know what to do - this is absolutely ok. You might feel that your life could improve and that you could live it more fully - this is definitely ok. You may have noticed you keep repeating unhelpful behaviour patterns - this is ok, too.

I specialise in working with longstanding anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties, helping individuals and couples understand how their past impacts the life they want to live.
I am trained to doctoral level in a variety of therapies, however I draw predominantly on psychodynamic and attachment based therapies when working with individuals & couples, i.e. helping people look at how their early life experiences and relationships shape the ways in which they relate to themselves and others, and how this may be causing their problems.

Marriage Counselling
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
