I offer sessions Mon/Thurs/Fri in-person at The Nest wellbeing studio in New Mills, online via Teams, or outdoors for 'Walk & Talk'.
Are you experiencing the effects of trauma, relational abuse, eating/body/lifestyle-related difficulties or neurodivergent overwhelm? These issues are my core specialisms, however I also support clients in creative and high‑pressure roles who are navigating burnout, identity shifts or chronic tension. Many clients come to me feeling stuck, burnt out or carrying long‑term stress as symptoms in their bodies. Some have tried to cope alone through research, journalling or self‑help but nothing has shifted enough. I offer a calm, grounded space where you can slow down, feel understood and begin to make sense of what is happening.

I qualified as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in England after moving from Romania. Uprooting your life and starting from scratch, reinventing yourself is not easy, but it also provides fantastic opportunities for growth. From my humble beginnings, I now feel so proud and privileged to work in the field of Psychotherapy. Life has brought me many riches, but none as great as those which my clients and supervisees bring every day in my counselling room. Being in a position where I can empower others to improve their relationship with self and others is a true gift.

I offer weekly, in-person therapy in Manchester and the High Peak.
People often reach out when something in their life feels heavy, confusing or quietly overwhelming. You don’t need to have a clear story to begin. I offer a calm, confidential space where you can slow down, speak honestly, and explore what feels out of step or painful. Much of what shapes us lives below the surface — old patterns, shame, grief, relationships, the body’s responses. Therapy is a place to bring these into conversation, gently and at your pace, so that new understanding and possibilities can begin to emerge.

Online, in-person at Riverside Wellbeing Centre in Whaley Bridge, and walk-and-talk in the Sett Valley.
Are you feeling anxious, depressed, or stressed? Maybe it's pressure at work, a difficult relationship, or a growing sense that something needs to change. You may already know exactly what's wrong but haven't found a way through it yet. Many of the men I work with have spent a long time managing on their own before reaching out. Some arrive with a specific difficulty in mind. Others just want space to think honestly about what's going on, with someone outside their work, family, and friendships.

I see clients face-to-face in Buxton and also offer online sessions for those who prefer the flexibility of therapy at home.
At the heart of my approach is the belief that when people feel safe, understood and supported, it becomes easier to explore difficult experiences and begin creating meaningful change. Together we may explore patterns that are holding you back, develop healthier ways of coping with anxiety or stress, and build greater self-compassion and resilience.

I'm Stu, the Lead Therapist and Founder SJR Therapy. I’m passionate about mental health and firmly believe that counselling can change a persons life. I have a wealth of experience in lots of different areas - I worked in education for a number of years, as a counsellor and mentor to teaching staff and students and worked in the financial service industry before changing careers to counselling and psychotherapy. Having struggled with poor mental health myself and receiving therapy as a result, I can totally understand the nerves and anxiety that you may have before you embark on your therapeutic journey but you have nothing to fear.

I offer online and in-person sessions, with availability on Fridays.
Counselling is not a one-size-fits-all approach, so I am very mindful of providing a service that meets the needs of the people I support and work with. If you are unsure whether counselling is right for you and would like to understand a little more about how I work, please reach out and book an intro call. I am always happy to share the ways I work and would be keen to understand what you would like to get out of counselling. I really believe that clients are the experts in their own lives and need a space where they can be witnessed, seen, and heard. I aim to offer a space that feels safe, contained and emotionally held.

I have worked within an NHS practice and a secondary school for a number of years. This means that my clients have been adults, teenagers and children of different ages, backgrounds, and faiths. As an integrative counsellor I offer short-term and long-term counselling. I support the restoring of positive mental health by using a range of traditional models and creative techniques tailored specifically to each individual client's need. Because I appreciate how daunting it can be meeting a stranger, I offer an initial session at £35, so that my client and I can meet and experience a positive start to therapy. Further sessions are £55

I work online, using a secure video platform, or in person.
Sometimes the difficulties you have in the present are influenced by how things have been for you in the past. How you have coped with the tough experiences, the beliefs you have developed about yourself and the world, your habitual responses. You want to improve things for yourself but you can't see a way through. Maybe you have tried other ways of getting better, maybe with some success, but the underlying problems just turn up in different ways. You are here because you know that you are not out of options. Psychotherapy has helped many people like you. And with me, you are in a safe pair of hands. EMDR is an option for you too.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
