Bereavement Counselling in Heywood
I have worked with a diverse range of clients since qualifying over a decade ago, and pride myself on being able to work effectively with an individual regardless of their specific circumstances. Having said that, I find that I work most effectively with clients who are eager for change and open to receiving challenge in a safe and comfortable environment. Whether they have a clear image of how they would like their life to be, or need help to cope with a seemingly overwhelming issue, I am happy to help. I believe that working collaboratively to understand, overcome and grow from life's challenges can be a rewarding process.

What I can help you with:
Some clients need a space to share their experiences, to vent about work or offload the pressures life brings, others need help with self-esteem. Some have traumatic and life-changing events to carefully unpick and address. Whatever it is that brings you to counselling, we can take the journey together, at your pace and on your terms.
I work with clients face to face or online.
At present, I do not offer couples therapy or work with people under 18 years of age.

I work with adults (any age, gender or sexual orientation) experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief or bereavement, addiction issues or relationship problems.
I work in a person centred way and offer you a safe, confidential, non-judgmental space in which to explore your feelings. Sometimes, routines, values and habits which we have held for years unquestioningly, can keep us stuck in unhealthy routines, or even cause us harm; they may be no longer useful. Together, we can unpick these to help you move forward.

I am especially experienced with traumatic bereavement, through personal experience and having volunteered for three years at a Bereavement Service, supporting people following difficult losses, such as suicide.
Often these difficulties have roots in our early relationships and traumatic experiences, which take time to become aware of and process. As a Gestalt therapist I pay particular attention to your experience in the present moment, especially your embodied experience, as I work with the understanding that everything important from our past is here now.

It can be hard to find a balance between work, relationships, family & other commitments to prioritise yourself. No matter what brings you to therapy the most important part is the relationship we will share. I aim to ensure you feel heard & give you a space to work through anything you want to bring to help you have a greater insight & self-awareness and I will walk alongside you on this journey. Counselling isn't a one size fits all package it's as individual as you are.

You might seek help with a life transition whether that is living together, becoming parents, blending families, retiring, or seek help with a specific issue such as emotional withdrawal or feeling insecure, sexual intimacy, an affair, bereavement, or facing illness.
I use a psychodynamic and ISTDP approach where our thoughts and feelings in the present are explored in the context of looking at family relationships and early experiences. Making links with our past and present can bring a greater understanding of where our patterns of behaviour and beliefs come from, and how you relate to others and to yourself.

Bereavement Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
