If you’re struggling with anxiety, feeling sad or numb, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, or a sense of being stuck, it can be hard to know where to begin.
I have a wide range of experience, including working with parents (both new parents and those raising teenagers), young adults, individuals navigating major life transitions or uncertainty, people coping with loss or a health diagnoses that impact their lives, and men who statistically find it more difficult to access therapy.

You may be turning to therapy with a specific issue in mind; feelings of loss, loneliness, anxiety or shame.
I have a particular interest in our ability to experience and to bring mindfulness to our thoughts and emotions but also to the body. Our potential for change, relationship issues and the impact of dyslexia are other keen themes of exploration. The focus of my 'CPD' is currently to develop a working understanding of the systemic constellation approach.

Wrestling with these feelings may give rise to anxiety or feeling withdrawn and low.
The opportunity to express yourself in this way can be beneficial in itself. Therapy also aims to facilitate an understanding of how our feelings are connected to our experiences, our circumstances and our expectations. In essence, therapy is a relationship that provides a platform for understanding yourself and bringing about positive changes.

People can come to therapy for all sorts of reasons: they might be struggling at work or feeling dissatisfied in a relationship or coming to terms with a traumatic childhood. They might need a different approach depending on their goals - so a more structured, goal based intervention might be suitable for someone who wants to be more effective in the workplace. The person affected by a traumatic past might want to develop a stronger abiity to self-soothe - this could be through guided imagery, relaxation, breathing or just through experiencing the therapeutic relationship as safe and accepting.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
