I am a fully qualified counsellor and psychotherapist working with both individuals and couples from a comfortable consulting room in central Haywards Heath. I aim to offer a confidential and safe space for clients to bring whatever is challenging or troubling them. Starting therapy can be the first step towards responding to emotional distress, anxiety, depression, life-stage challenges, loss and bereavement. For couples this can be in response to numerous changes in the relationship over time, or specific events.

I am passionate about CBT and my therapeutic approach offers curiosity, compassion, support, non-judgement, knowledge and hope throughout a goals-led treatment process. I am a huge advocate for 'keeping things simple' and work creatively - using metaphors, imagery, reference to pop culture/social media platforms and humour (where appropriate!) to sustain client interest and aid learning and insight. I am a therapist who believes human connection is vital, particularly in this day-and-age of AI and virtual forms of interaction. My preferred method of working therefore is in-person (although I do also offer online methods.)

Do you find yourself grappling with the weight of low self-esteem, self-doubt, stress, anxiety, or depression, or facing difficulties such as bereavement, trauma, family issues, the loss of a job or relationship problems and you find yourself personally limited or overwhelmed. Perhaps you may be experiencing familiar distressing situations and begin to wonder why you encounter the same problem over and over again or question the ways you find yourself reacting and relating. Life transitions can also be confusing times, as you ask yourself big questions such as: Who am I? What do I want?

If you are experiencing the distressing symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or you have a diagnosis of OCD please do get in touch. You may be having distressing and unwanted intrusive thoughts or images, engaging in repetitive behaviours such as frequent checking, washing or repeating or mental reviewing and avoidance. Often people can feel embarrassed or scared talking about their intrusive thoughts or the behaviours they feel urged to undertake. I hope my years of experience using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention will help you feel able to discuss and successfully challenge OCD.

You might be suffering in silence and feel exhausted trying to 'be strong', often for others, and your own tank is empty. You might be struggling with anxiety, depression, stress or low self-esteem and not know where to turn. Perhaps you're facing relationship difficulties, grief, trauma or a major life transition that feels so overwhelming right now and you can't switch off. It could be past experiences that are still affecting you, or a sense that something just 'isn’t right'. Often we may not know the source of our pain, yet the weight and burden of carrying it feels very real, overwhelming and painful.

Feeling seen, heard and understood is essential for our health and I provide a safe place for this. When we feel that our bodies and minds are working against us it can overwhelm, exhaust and isolate us. I help people who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences reconnect with their sense of safety, worth and agency. Sometimes simply the absence of empathy and understanding in our early years can be sufficient to cause deep wounds. I am an experienced therapist, using a Trauma-informed, Attachment and body-based approach to gently support healing.

Hi, I am Sam. Whether you're facing anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems or difficulties relating to ADHD, I offer a safe and impartial space in which to really consider what’s going on in your life at your own pace and begin to make real changes. I have always approached each client I work with slightly differently and I believe this forms the basis of meaningful connection between us. This is, for me, the most fundamental element of good therapy. People are different and being adaptive is key. I listen and I aim to understand and get to know you in a way which facilitates change and movement.

I recognise everyone's narrative is different and I offer a safe, confidential space to be listened to. Sometimes just this in itself is enough for someone to organise and verbalise their thoughts so that they can move on. But sometimes the issues are more deep routed and need to be brought to the surface before we can deal with them. This may require more thought-provoking work with a client. Sometimes however people do have an insight into themselves and why they feel the way they do but again do not know how to leave their old narrative behind and move on.

People often come to me for therapy because they feel like there's something in their life they can't fully get to the bottom of. Maybe it's your anxiety that won't go, your feeling of depression that seems cyclical, not quite feeling like you know who you are, or problems which seem to continually appear in your relationships. Whatever it is that's brought you to search for a therapist, what I can tell you is that I will work with you and support you to unpick what's actually underneath your current pain and discomfort. By better understanding yourself and your history, you can start to see recurring patterns and make changes.

I am trained both medically (1985) and in psychodynamic counselling (2013) and so have valuable experience in how both the mind and the body operate in healthy and unhealthy states, and how these parts importantly interact. What is happening in our unconscious is so very important in us all. Whatever the sources and maintaining factors in your suffering, I am able to explore your life story with you and help guide you to enable change and healing, or that would be my goal, so that you can find the way out of the prison that our suffering creates and to transform your way of being that frees you up to find a life that works for you.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
