Perhaps you feel low, anxious or overwhelmed, or you're struggling with confusing or stuck patterns, within you, or in your relationships.  From outside, you may look like you're holding things together. But inside you may feel not good enough or fear your feelings are too much.  You don’t have to face this alone. Therapy is a space to begin feeling relief, healing & to grow deep self-understanding.

Hello, my name is Matthew and I’m a counsellor based at Havant Meeting Place - Havant United Reformed Church. I acknowledge counselling is a brave step to take with initially making the enquiry and then having the courage to attend the first session. I have had counselling in my life and being listened to seemed surreal at first. Friends and family had always given their opinions and reassurances, with the best of intentions at heart, yet being really listened to was ground-breaking for me. I aim to ease any anxiety by arranging an appointment as soon as possible so therapy can begin.

You may have recently received a diagnosis, or perhaps you recognise traits of Autism or ADHD in yourself and would like space to explore what this means for you.
My approach is psychodynamic, which means we may explore how past experiences and relationships could be influencing how you feel and relate to yourself and others today. By developing greater understanding and awareness, it can become easier to make sense of your experiences and move forward in a way that feels right for you.

I work with adults, children, young people, couples and groups who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally stuck. They may be navigating trauma, grief, family estrangement, or living with hidden disabilities or neurodiversity. Often, they long for understanding, calm, and a sense of balance within themselves and their relationships. They want to feel heard, accepted, and supported as they safely explore their emotions. Through Humanistic Counselling and Integrated Therapy, they aim to build resilience, heal old wounds, and rediscover clarity, confidence, and inner peace.

Counselling can be really helpful when you just need someone to talk to and it can offer so much more. When you are feeling like something is just not right or life seems so challenging, talking to a Counsellor can make the difference. Many people just want to feel better and get a sense of relief from the turmoil of life. It may be that a life event has really impacted on you, such as a bereavement, trauma or loss of a job. You may feel like the world just does not understand you or perhaps you are struggling to come to terms with your sexuality. There are many many different reasons why people choose counselling. We're all unique.

I’m a BABCP-accredited CBT practitioner and a member of the EMDR Association. I have over 15 years’ experience in the NHS and academic settings. Over the years, I’ve found that no single therapy works for everyone, so I draw on a range of approaches—including Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and EMDR—to find what works best for you. At the end of the day, what matters most to me is creating a safe, understanding space where you feel heard. We’ll work together, at your pace, to explore your challenges and move towards the changes you’d like to see in your life.

I wonder how life is for you right now, maybe something difficult has happened, perhaps you are struggling with feelings that make life a challenge? Whatever's going on for you, it can be hard to find the right words to explain how you're feeling. I offer creative expression in therapy (art, poetry, sound, drama, objects) alongside talking counselling. I help with issues such as anxiety, coping with depression, overcoming grief, trauma, low self esteem, people pleasing ... Together we consider the impact of early life experiences and how internal defences maybe show up now. I work at a safe pace using a trauma informed approach.

I work with adults who feel they may have recently been diagnosed or feel that they identify with ADHD, Autism and AUDHD
Are you struggling with your mental health? Do you often feel overwhelmed or misunderstood while trying to cope on the outside? If you've been diagnosed with ADHD later in life or are just starting to recognise neurodiversity in yourself, you're not alone. Many clients feel drained by self-doubt and repeating patterns that hinder their well-being. I offer a safe space to discuss anxiety, low mood, and feelings of being stuck in cycles of overthinking or burnout. I am here to help you feel seen and heard.

I've been where you are now, looking for a therapist and not sure who to choose! Deciding to have therapy and choosing who to embark on the journey with can be a daunting prospect. But, you’ve taking the first step to sharing your difficulties and that’s a great start. Having had my own therapy I know how important it is to find the right therapist. I offer a safe, welcoming space for you to share what is happening for you. I won’t judge or tell you to do things. I will support you with the choices you make. I offer appointments from 8am to 8pm and may be available at short notice.

I love working with clients who see the world a little differently. Exploring their unique view of the world and finding a way forward together towards the future they are looking for is a grand adventure. The great thing about counselling is you don't have to start out knowing where you want to end up, just that you want to be moving - we can find the right direction together!

What is the most effective treatment for autism?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?
Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?
Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
