'I just want to be free from my
anxiety
,''I will never be good enough,''They're better than me.' Maybe it's crippling
anxiety
where you're fearful of every situation, whether it's the now or related to a past trauma. Maybe you lack confidence in body & self, disliking yourself and feeling like you don't know who you are which causes you to be afraid to be you. Perhaps it's attachment patterns in relationships, fear of trusting due to being let down & abandoned, the terror of ending up hurt and alone. Well, I can help. After all, Tom, Dick or Harry telling us that 'It'll be okay' is well meaning but does it help?

To hold onto issues whether from childhood or a few years ago can keep us in a place that is painful and confusing and can seem impossible to move on from. This can lead to mental health problems such as
anxiety
or depression or some form of addiction that keeps you stuck. By starting to talk through these issues with a counsellor it can lead to a freedom and understanding about yourself and then you are able to move on with your life.

Here are some of the issues I have helped clients explore: depression,
anxiety
, stress, bereavement, loss, anger, family relationships, relationships with partners, self-harm, lack of self esteem, suicidal thoughts, health-related issues, self-development, creativity, mindfulness, spirituality, search for meaning.
If you decide to work with me it will be rather like setting out on a journey together. On that journey I’ll be your fellow traveller, companion and guide. Whether or not your reason for coming to see me is an external situation that’s impacting your life, a key part of our time together will be to explore your inner world. As we explore that world together you may develop greater insight into patterns of thought and behaviour that served you once but now limit you; you may find alternative ways of approaching difficulties; you may discover a way of being in the world that is more in tune with who you truly are.

I have helped people explore and think about past events and people that may be contributing to their present difficulties, often the causes of feelings such as
anxiety
or sadness are buried in the past and may seem unconnected with how things are now, making those connections and putting difficult or painful memories behind us is usually very helpful .
Whatever the issues and problems we have to face, one question seems to come up whether we are aware of it or not, which is how much if any control do we have over the way we feel, especially when we feel very powerful or overwhelming emotions. Usually the bad things happen (or are said) when we are out of control and completely in the grip of our feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, lust, greed etc. However trying to remove or erase these feelings, an obvious and often tried solution doesn’t seem to work that well, usually they squirt out and can be even more damaging by being denied and buried.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
