Loss
takes many forms, such as the
loss
of opportunities or for the life we haven't lived.
I am a Person-Centred Therapist who works with individuals and couples. Whatever brings you to counselling I aim to offer a space for you to feel heard, accepted and understood. We will work together to create a place where you can feel safe enough to explore what is happening for you and where you can gain a greater understanding yourself and your situation. This can bring a sense of ease and relief and a freedom to feel less weighed down by the things you have been carrying with you. I work with clients from the surrounding areas of Otley, Ilkley, Harrogate, Knaresborough and York.

Why counselling? Counselling can help with all sorts of different issues. It can help with positive events such as choosing a direction in life or reaching your full potential. There may be things from your past that you would like to tackle or there may be things in the present that you want to try and change. Perhaps you are experiencing significant events in your life such as getting married and starting a family, leaving home for the first time or coming to terms with the
death
of a loved one. Maybe you are feeling anxious or stressed, there are many, many reasons why we might need a bit of support .

I began providing therapeutic counselling to bring my years of experience in Palliative Care working with
bereavement
,
grief
, carer fatigue and difficult transitions to meet a wide set of needs.
We each have our own particular blend of resources and limitations, specific to us and unique as a fingerprint. That's why my therapeutic counselling doesn't provide 6-step plans, workbooks or programmes. It's open, free-flowing and exploratory. It takes the time to clear a regular safe space in which to unpack the events, relationships and emotions that you bring with you to this moment. To think about your feeling and feel your thinking. To talk, to laugh, to be tired, angry, uplifted or simply just to take the time to be. With compassion, empathy and without judgment.

bereavement
,
loss
, self esteem, low mood, relationship issues.
I work in a relational way, treating each client as a unique individual with a unique set of circumstances. I aim to really understand what each person is dealing with. There are many different types of therapy that inform my work such as Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Sometimes words are not adequate to express how we are feeling, and so it can be useful to utilise creative techniques such as drawing or using the imagination. The space I offer is safe and non-judgemental. I aim to accept and support you in a warm and caring environment as you explore your inner thoughts and feelings.

Offering person-centred online counselling to adults (18+) seeking assistance to find a sense of calm and balance when faced with adversity and the difficulties life can present. In order to understand the impact of an issue and work through it with care and respect, it is often helpful to appreciate the person and their experience, which is why together we will aim to adopt a compassionate, empathetic and non-judgemental approach to our sessions. As a person-centred counsellor, I draw from positive psychology, mental fitness and compassion focused therapy techniques to invite empowerment and client autonomy.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
