Marriage Counselling in Harpenden

Valley Counselling
Psychotherapist, MBACP
I offer individual and couples counselling in Harpenden and surrounding areas using the psychodynamic approach, which is a talking therapy.
Problems are personal, bereavement, depression, stress, relationship breakdowns and anxiety can all feel unbearable and isolating. The reasons for seeking counselling or psychotherapy are as unique and varied as we are. Sometimes we have an idea of what is annoying or upsetting us. Sometimes we struggle to understand issues that darken our days. We might enter a cycle of blame or self-loathing in which we get lost, finding it difficult to move forwards in our lives.

Stephanie Day
Psychotherapist, MSc, GMBPsS
I often work with self-esteem, phobias, loss of direction, trauma, depression, OCD, couples counselling and weight-control.
Though you may feel apprehensive about seeking therapy I am here to put you at ease and offer a free consultation to discuss your needs. I will help you achieve a deep understanding of your difficulties and why you may feel stuck. The way we frame our experiences and the beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world are the cause of self-disturbance. I will show you how to overcome this so you can achieve a complete, transformative and permanent change. We will literally rewire your brain by creating new neural pathways, and you'll become your own therapist, equipped with the knowledge to live life with freedom and happiness.

Whether you're experiencing difficulties in your relationship, feeling disconnected from your partner, navigating family conflict, facing a significant life transition, or adjusting to the emotional and relational impact of menopause, therapy offers a space to pause, reflect and make sense of what is happening.
I believe healing happens in our relationships—with ourselves, our past, our future and the people around us. Life experiences shape how we see ourselves and respond to challenges, sometimes leaving us feeling stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected. I think of therapy as sitting together with a jigsaw. Rather than rushing to find answers, we take time to explore the pieces, make sense of the picture and discover new possibilities. Even when some pieces are missing, understanding, hope and a way forward can still emerge.

Talking to someone who really hears and understands you can be the first step of the journey towards positive change. Maybe you're feeling low and don't know why? Maybe you are trying to overcome big life events and everything has changed around you and you need some support? Perhaps you just don't know why you can't sleep, or why your tears surprise you and you want to know more? The good news is that Gestalt counselling can help.

There are times in our lives when our ability to cope alone is significantly diminished. You may be there right now. Perhaps negative experiences from the past, or significant life changing experiences have altered the way you think, feel, or behave. You want to move forward, but just can't seem to break the cycle of shame, guilt and fear? You may be unsure who you can trust? My personal experience and faith in God's transforming power fuels my passion to come alongside the hurting, wounded, confused, lonely and voiceless as I witness broken lives being restored.

Not all grief begins with bereavement. You may be coping with the death of someone you love, a cancer diagnosis, chronic illness or pain, CFS, relationship breakdown, parenting challenges, redundancy, retirement, an empty nest, or a future that no longer looks as you expected. These experiences can leave you questioning who you are, what comes next, or why you're finding it so hard to cope. If you're used to being the person others rely on but now feel anxious, overwhelmed or stuck, we'll use IFS and attachment-informed therapy to understand what's happening beneath the surface and create lasting emotional change.

FAQ - Marriage Counselling
What issues does marriage counselling help with?
Marriage counselling can address common relationship concerns, including ongoing conflict, communication challenges, emotional distance, or difficulty making decisions together. It may also be helpful for couples who are not currently experiencing major problems but want to prepare for future life changes. For more specific concerns affecting one individual in the relationship, such as trauma, depression, or significant substance use concerns, individual therapy may be more appropriate than marriage counselling.

When is the right time to start marriage counselling?
There is no single “right” time to start marriage counselling, but certain signs may suggest that counselling could be helpful. For example, a couple may benefit from counselling if many conversations end in conflict, if negative interactions are becoming more frequent, or if relationship stress is affecting other areas of life, such as sleep, work, parenting, or friendships. Some couples also seek counselling proactively. Premarital counselling, for instance, allows couples to discuss communication styles, finances, family dynamics, and future goals before getting married. Other couples may start counselling before a major life change, such as becoming parents, relocating, or navigating a stressful career transition.

Is marriage counselling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Marriage counselling may still help even if one partner is more hesitant to attend, as long as both people are ultimately willing to participate in sessions. Once counselling is underway, the more hesitant partner may become more open to sessions that can strengthen the relationship and build coping skills and communication strategies. If one partner refuses to attend, individual therapy may still help the other partner understand their needs, set boundaries, and decide how to approach the relationship.

Is online marriage counselling as effective as in-person?
There are differing opinions on the best format for marriage counselling. While some studies show that online marriage counselling can be as effective as in-person counselling, some argue that in-person counselling is more effective because it allows the therapist to better pick up on context and body language cues. In addition, in-person counselling may be a better fit for couples who are working through high-conflict issues. Ultimately, the “best” format depends on the couple’s specific needs and concerns.

What is faith-based marriage counselling and how is it different?
Faith-based marriage counselling incorporates a couple’s religious or spiritual beliefs into counselling. It may be a good fit for couples who want to discuss their relationship, values, and marriage within the context of their faith. For example, Christian marriage counselling may appeal to couples who want a counsellor familiar with Christian beliefs about marriage. Other forms of faith-based counselling may incorporate Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or other religious perspectives into sessions.

How much does marriage counselling cost and is it covered by insurance?
Marriage counselling is usually paid for privately in Great Britain, rather than through the NHS, and sessions often cost around £60 to £120 or more. Fees depend on location, with costs generally higher in the London area, as well as counsellor experience, session length, and practice setting. However, lower-cost options may be available through sliding scale fees, which adjust the cost of counselling based on income, as well as through community clinics or non-profit organisations that offer reduced-cost services.
