Do you often feel empty or invisible, searching for fulfillment in work or relationships? Past experiences of rejection or abandonment can make it hard to express yourself and connect with others. Social situations may feel overwhelming, and the pressure to succeed can leave you drained, leading to physical symptoms like skin issues or chronic pain. In our safe and compassionate space, we’ll work together to explore these feelings. I’ll help you understand the triggers of shame and guilt that contribute to self-critical thoughts, impacting your mood and confidence.

I work with individuals and with groups, offering a 'safe' environment, one which is welcoming, respectful, warm, accepting and non-judgemental. So often in current times, it can feel as if we are 'functions' as opposed to feeling, thinking human beings so it is important to me that you are able to be and feel heard and valued. I offer both talking and person-centred art therapies, in individual or group settings. I also offer integrative clinical supervision. Mindfulness tuition is also available. Both daytime and evening appointments are available.

If you are at a point in life where you feel stuck or at a point of crisis, and it's preventing your ability to enjoy things as you have normally, you may be needing some extra help to find a way forward. Or if one or more of your relationships with others is becoming difficult, and you don't know why, then this can indicate you are struggling. If your inner world is feeling desperate or muddled and too difficult to manage alone, then counselling can be a positive step in trying to change that. To sit and explore your story and feelings with someone can be powerful in unblocking difficult feelings and to understand what you need.

As a CBT therapist I work well with any depression or anxiety based disorders including low self esteem, generalised anxiety, OCD, PTSD, Health anxiety, social anxiety, Phobias and panic disorder. People are often bothered by highly distressing symptoms and have a clear idea about what they would like to get from therapy which is usually a reduction of symptoms and getting life back on track. People often seek clarity and an explanation for their distress followed by solutions of how to deal with them. My specialist area of interests are trauma, GAD, co-morbid long term health conditions and adolescents.

I specialise in male psychology, understanding that men face particular challenges and process things differently from women. I support men and women in addiction recovery, those in suicidal crisis and other distress such as trauma, bereavement, OCD or panic attacks. I combine counselling theory with coaching skills, using several models which can be adapted to your individual needs. We work together and adjust the process as we go along. I can change how I work as your awareness develops and different issues come up. I can help you to refine your goals, learn new strategies, get free of old baggage, and create a path forward.

Hi, I'm Caitlyn. I know how overwhelming the search for a therapist can be - especially when life can already feel overwhelming. Many people turn to therapy because they are struggling with depression and anxiety, processing a loss, wanting to understand themselves better, longing to shift areas of stuckness, living with relational difficulties, or experiencing the aftermath of trauma. Therapy can be a place to engage with your story, be met in your pain, understand your patterns of relating, and feel seen.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
