Everyone experiences a wide range of feelings in life. You may be experiencing difficulties at home, work, college or university, with relationships, health and other life struggles. You may have reached a point in life where you need more than a friendly ear and I appreciate that seeing a counsellor can seem overwhelming. My aim is to provide a professional, but warm, confidential non-judgemental, caring, safe environment where you and I can explore your difficulties together. I place a lot of emphasis on our relationship, with us getting to know each-other and working collaboratively to improve your wellbeing.

My inspiration for this career stems from a desire to connect and communicate with people. This inclination has been a thread throughout my life. Having undertaken Counselling myself I have directly experienced the cathartic and powerful change it brings about. I work with both individuals and couples/relationships. Developing a trusting relationship and being aware of what happens between us is core to effective therapy. I work to understand the situation that you need support with and look at how this is impacting your life. I work with both individuals and couples/relationships, including those seeking focused Couples Therapy.

The aim is not to give advice, but rather to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.
Therapy is an opportunity to think about the role your unconscious mental life may play in the difficulties you face and their resolution. The goal is not only to work to relieve inner conflict and suffering, but also to help you to achieve a deeper self-understanding, to allow you to overcome the obstacles that frustrate your development as an individual.

Clients often choose me when they want to work deeply on challenging relationships, anxiety, trauma or burnout.
My approach blends Jungian, psychodynamic and person-centred therapies with neuroscience. We will look beyond surface symptoms at the "whole" you, exploring the hidden patterns causing anxiety, depression or a sense of being stuck. The aim is to help you feel more "at home" in yourself and in your relationships. Not to fix your problems but to outgrow them.

My approach is shaped by the idea that we can begin from where we are, without needing to be perfect or have everything figured out. Often the things we struggle with make sense in the context of our lives, even if they no longer feel helpful now. I work in a relational way, taking time to understand what’s been happening for you rather than trying to move too quickly towards change.

You may suffer from anxiety and low self-esteem, have been through a loss or bereavement or other traumatic events that continue to affect you in a negative way.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) is particularly effective if you have distressing or traumatic events that continue to impact your life. Our mind can often heal itself naturally, particularly when we are asleep during rapid eye movement sleep. EMDR uses this natural process to heal a wide range of issues. I see clients in person or online.

I offer a warm, non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. As an integrative counsellor, I believe each person’s story, background and needs are unique and therapy should reflect that.

Choosing me as your counsellor. If you’re looking for a counsellor, you need to find someone who is going to be a good “fit” for you. I believe that the most important part of any counselling is having a good relationship with the therapist. You need to be able to trust me and feel comfortable talking to me about yourself. Otherwise you cannot get the best out of the experience. Contacting a counsellor for the first time can be daunting. You might be nervous or struggling to put things into words. It is okay if you are not quite sure what you want from this, I will do everything I can to put you at your ease.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
