I'm Tom, a psychotherapist offering a combination that most therapists don't - CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I) the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for sleep problems, alongside EMDR, which helps people work through the anxiety, stress, or trauma that's often underneath poor sleep, low mood, and negative or limiting beliefs.
I have 10 years experience helping adults experiencing insomnia and sleep difficulties, nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, low self-esteem, PTSD and trauma. Whether sleep is the main problem, or something you've noticed alongside anxiety or low mood, we'll figure out together what's keeping you stuck and help you achieve lasting change.

Well done for taking the first step in looking for support. Reaching out can feel daunting, and many people spend a long time wondering whether therapy is the right step for them. The fact that you’re here suggests that something in your life may not be feeling quite right, and you’re beginning to think about change. I have worked in mental health for over 17 years and have been a qualified counsellor for more than 13 years. My experience includes working with adults and young people facing complex and long-standing difficulties to find some sense of relief and control in their lives.

Many of my clients find me because they have tried "everything" and nothing seems to work. With long histories of challenging experiences, negative thought patterns, and emotional overload, it can be hard to know where to start. I help clients get to the root of their issues, learn skills to cope with current distress, and, if needed, process through past traumas. Paying equal attention to mind and body, we work together to bring a sense of calm to both. If you are ready to move beyond traditional "talk therapy", discover the origin of your distress, and experience relief from emotional reactivity or numbness, let's connect.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, or disconnected from yourself, even if things appear fine on the outside. I work with people who are experiencing stress, emotional tension, or a sense of being stuck, and are looking for a deeper, more embodied way of understanding themselves. Somatic psychotherapy supports you to slow down, reconnect with your body and begin to gently shift patterns that no longer serve you.

I am particularly passionate about working with trauma survivors and helping them navigate through flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, fear, despair, anger, guilt, shame, and insomnia with a focus on building strength and resilience.
People with complex PTSD avoid seeking help due to the fear of having to relive painful past experiences. As a practitioner with profound interest in PTSD, I understand this concern deeply which is why I use a highly compassionate and structured 3-phase trauma model that focuses on establishing safety & stability before delving into distressing memories.

Everyone faces challenges, dilemmas, fears, problems and issues in their lives. Sometimes we can manage to cope. Sometimes our usual coping methods don't seem to work. We find ourselves struggling and we need someone to talk to, someone who will listen and to somewhere we can talk about our feelings and thoughts and to explore opportunities for change - to get our lives back on track again.

Hello, my name is Tarn. Making the decision to undertake counselling is a big step and if it is for you, then I can provide a safe and confidential space for us to work together. Counselling is both a time and a space for you. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming and we are mostly able to cope, carry on and even strive at times. However, life can be testing and the emotional responses are often felt negatively as anxiety and/or fear, anger or sadness. Negative emotions are a natural response to unfamiliar or demanding experiences but these are big emotions that we do not want; can struggle to overcome and can impact upon daily life.

Psychotherapist, MBACP
Hi, I’m Caroline and I’m an integrative, heart-centred psychotherapist. I’m glad you’re here. I know it can feel like a lot to look for a therapist and reach out for support. I tried to make my page punchy and straight to the point, but it didn’t feel like me anymore, so I decided to write you a letter instead. I hope this will help you to get a sense of whether I’m the right person to hold space for you, so get yourself a cup of tea and have a read. I’m guessing you’re here because you’re carrying something that you can’t work through on your own.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
