I work with clients who may be struggling with depression and anxiety arising from a range of issues, such as work-related stress, infertility, relationship problems, life decisions, major life transitions and chronic pain.
If anxiety and depression are getting in the way of you living your life the way you want to, we can work together to change that. We can often feel low when life isn’t going as planned or anxious and overwhelmed when we are struggling to cope. This is why I created ‘The Calm Clinic with Libby Thompson’, to provide people with a safe, comfortable space to be open about their stresses and worries, feel heard and validated whilst discussing strategies and techniques that may be helpful. Therapy is a partnership, a joint journey, and my aim is to provide you with the individual support you need to make positive changes.

Many people come to therapy not because they have a clear problem to solve, but because something in their relationships, family life, or emotional world no longer makes sense.
Therapy offers a space to slow things down and make sense of experiences that may feel confusing, repetitive, or difficult to put into words. Together we can explore not only what is happening now, but also the relationships, experiences, and patterns that may help us understand it, working at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.

Through therapy, clients develop a steadier sense of worth — no longer dependent on achievement — and a deeper experience of belonging rooted in a more stable relationship with themselves.
I frequently work with people who appear to be coping well on the surface — managing responsibilities, meeting expectations, and often being the reliable one for others. Internally, however, they may feel disconnected, depleted, and quietly exhausted.
I specialise in working with burnout and the longer-term impact of chronic over-adaptation — the tension between who you are and who you feel you must be.

I also support couples experiencing challenges in their relationship, helping them understand the emotional conflicts that leave the relationship strained or at risk of ending without support.
The initial sessions will focus on developing a shared understanding of what is happening psychologically that is giving rise to your difficulties, or maintaining them. A shared understanding of the problem provides a focus for psychotherapy. Effective therapy has a clear focus, and this will help support better outcomes and, ultimately, life beyond therapy.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
