You may be feeling life is just too much to manage right now, perhaps you've had a bereavement or loss, or maybe something from the past is impacting on how you are feeling. Asking for professional help can feel daunting, but once you've made that decision, it can bring relief and then finding the right person, who can hear your concerns and support you, is really important. I can offer a safe, confidential space and give you the time and space to explore what is going on for you, to help you gain awareness and insight into what's troubling you and help you reach your goals.

Clients come to me because they feel something is not quite right in their lives. They may be anxious about relationships, work, college or simply feel that they cannot cope with life. They want someone to listen to them in a non judgemental way. Many are stuck with past patterns of behaviours or negative thought patterns which no longer work for them. They may be wondering what therapy entails so I aim to put them at their ease when they first contact me. Clients tell me our sessions are relaxing, practical, sometimes even fun as we work together to make positive changes to their lives.

Life isn’t always easy and some things can be difficult to talk about, even to our closest friends and family. Perhaps you’re not sure how you feel or struggle to find the words when trying to describe your inner world to another. Whether you are struggling with how you feel, with what you think, or behaviours you wish to change, talking therapy can help you. Struggling with emotions, thoughts or behaviours are common experiences for everyone, but understanding and working to overcome them doesn’t always come so easily. I offer face-to-face talking therapy in a warm and non-judgemental environment.

We can all have difficulties in everyday life and encounter problems that we simply find hard to cope with alone. You may feel worried, anxious, low, confused, isolated or may be experience difficulties in relationships. You may be suffering from feelings of low self esteem or low self confidence. You may have been diagnosed with anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, or maybe you are just feeling sad. When these feelings and thoughts persist and become overwhelming it may be difficult to know which way to turn.

Less noise. More you. You don’t need “fixing” but space to think, to feel, to stop preforming. During our online sessions this is what I’d aim to provide you, a space in which there is no preforming, leaving the space for you to bring “you” not the mask you may find yourself wearing in daily life. You may feeling the pressures of life, struggle to navigate relationships, depressed, anxious, grieving and more.

Hi there! I am Amber, the Director of Healthy Mind Psychology. We aim to be a different type of practice. Our focus includes work with those people trying to cope with all the stresses and strains of unprecedented times upon us. But many struggle with issues outside of the normal narrative of mental health, or physical health too. Our practice aims to explain the stress response (whether that be from overdue bills, a critical family system, a harsh workplace, current or previous traumas, or a host of other things!) and the science behind how the mind/body interact to create physical symptoms, emotional distress, or bad habits!

Do you feel ripped apart and shaken to your core? You don't want to be a burden to your friends and you can't talk to family, it's all so overwhelming. The deepest pit of despair and hurt, mixed emotions, anguish, anger, confusion, barely coping with intense non- stop life changes. Loss of family, partner or treasured friend, sudden or chronic illness, even loss of the person you used to be! Aging, guilt about lifestyle, fear of a new job and moving... the prickly heartache from losing your beloved pet. You don't even have the strength to take the next step, to pull yourself through while trying to reach your old self.

Have you found yourself living a life that seems very different from the one you had imagined? Would like to understand why or how that has happened, and perhaps take steps to get on track towards a life that feels more rewarding, fulfilling and purposeful? Perhaps you want to rediscover your sense of self, that may have been obscured by competing demands and expectations. Perhaps you've experienced an unexpected loss, of a relationship, friend, your health or career. Perhaps you've identified a sense of unease, and hope for more joy from the next years than the previous. We can untangle past issues and work on your future goals.

Geriatric and Seniors Counsellors

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?

Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.

How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?

Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

How is counselling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?

Many aspects of geriatric counselling are similar to counselling in younger age groups; in general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

Can geriatric counselling help people who suffer from dementia?

Counselling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specialising in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counsellors specialising in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specialising in dementia may also be trained in specialised forms of therapy for memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
