Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counselling in Guildford
I use an integrative approach, blending Gestalt, EMDR, DBT, compassion and solution focussed work and creative interventions.
Welcome. You're not alone. And you can change.
Being traumatised can feel like being trapped in a wooden rowboat on the choppiest, wildest ocean imaginable – in danger, out of control, with no help, support, anchor or safety in sight.
You can change from traumatised to un-traumatised. From anxious and depressed to calm and balanced. From emotionally overwhelmed to having great emotional awareness, management and resilience. From feeling physically vulnerable and unsafe to confident and strong in your body. You can become your own anchor, able to ground and support yourself when life is, inevitably, challenging.

My work is informed and influenced by a deep understanding of psychodynamic psychotherapy, narrative therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy ( DBT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness training.
I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1996 and am registered with both the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the United Kingdom and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). During three decades of clinical practice, I have accumulated more than 20,000 hours of psychotherapy experience.
For much of my career, I specialised in supporting the psychological wellbeing of babies, children and families. My practice has evolved and I now work predominantly online with adolescents and adults, bringing a developmental perspective to what might be causing emotional distress or mental health problems.

I see that all behaviours such as self-harm, suicide attempts, drinking, drug abuse and other impulsive behaviours have developed as coping strategies to cope with and numb difficult emotions and experiences. These behaviours often act as a plaster to a deeper wound, but just like a plaster they don’t really ever fully heal unless they have time to heal properly. This is the work of therapy to take off the plaster and look more towards the root causes of the behaviour to work out what is going on for you. I work with adults who may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck or uncertain about their lives. Clients often come to therapy when they are struggling with relationships, stress, burnout, trauma, low self-esteem, life transitions, or patterns that no longer feel helpful. Some may have spent years managing alone and are ready to understand themselves more deeply. Together, we explore your experiences, including how the past may shape the present, in a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space, helping you develop greater resilience, clarity and self-understanding while creating the opportunity for meaningful change.

People often come to therapy when something in their emotional life or relationships feels hard to manage. You might feel overwhelmed or reactive, stuck in patterns that don’t shift, struggling with self-criticism, or finding that anxiety, low mood, or relationship difficulties keep returning despite effort or insight. Many people I work with are functioning well on the outside but struggling internally, or unsure where to begin.

If you're the person others rely on, asking for help yourself can feel unfamiliar. You may appear to be coping. You might be successful at work, meeting responsibilities and keeping everything together, but inside you feel exhausted, anxious or stuck in patterns of overthinking, self-criticism or people-pleasing. I help people who are used to pushing through, but who want to understand themselves more deeply and create lasting change. Together, we’ll explore what’s driving these patterns so you can feel calmer, more confident and more like yourself again.

Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
