We can all have difficulties in everyday life and encounter problems that we simply find hard to cope with alone. You may feel worried, anxious, low, confused, isolated or may be experience difficulties in relationships. You may be suffering from feelings of low self esteem or low self confidence. You may have been diagnosed with anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, or maybe you are just feeling sad. When these feelings and thoughts persist and become overwhelming it may be difficult to know which way to turn.

Life can bring experiences that feel impossible to talk about — especially when they've been shaped by hardship, crisis, or circumstances others find hard to understand. I'm a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist with a professional background working alongside vulnerable adults facing complex challenges, including homelessness, substance use, and mental health difficulties. I understand that life rarely fits neatly into categories — and that the people who have faced the most are often the least well served by traditional support.

Hello, I'm Deborah. Sometimes, we realise we need some support to cope with how we feel, but we may think it is too small to mention, or that it would be too much to share. You might be working through relationship, work or family challenges? Perhaps, you are feeling low, but not quite sure why? Just having someone to listen and support you in a non-judgmental way can help with perspective and recognising patterns or coping mechanisms. I have much experience in helping clients with anxiety, depression, stress, loss, sexual abuse, traumatic events, relationship issues or family conflicts.

Life can feel messy, confusing, or stuck — and that’s exactly what we’ll explore. Counselling with me isn’t about fixing you; it’s noticing the quirks, contradictions, and hidden patterns that make you… you. Expect curious conversation, gentle reflection, laughter where needed, and those tiny “oh… that actually makes sense” moments. I’m warm, approachable, a little unconventional, and fully focused on helping you understand yourself and shift in ways that actually stick. I work with adults and children aged 11 plus.

If you feel overwhelmed or stuck in patterns that don’t shift, therapy can help you understand and change what isn’t working. Dual-accredited psychotherapist, online and in person in Guildford.
People often come to therapy when something in their emotional life or relationships feels hard to manage. You might feel overwhelmed or reactive, stuck in patterns that don’t shift, struggling with self-criticism, or finding that anxiety, low mood, or relationship difficulties keep returning despite effort or insight. Many people I work with are functioning well on the outside but struggling internally, or unsure where to begin.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
