I also work for an organisation providing support to adults affected by drug and alcohol use.
At times we all go through struggles in life which affect our wellbeing, our relationships, and ability to function in our daily lives. I can offer you compassion and support so that you don’t have to manage on your own. You can lead on the content of each session and together we can explore your thoughts and feelings, and work through any challenges or difficulties that you are experiencing. Counselling can enable you to gain self-awareness, challenge your ways of thinking, and develop new strategies for coping that work for you, all of which will help to build your resilience.

Life brings many challenges and I'd imagine that one of the reasons you have come to this site is to find support or a safe port in what can often feel like a storm. I offer a safe, supportive, confidential and non-judgemental space to explore a wide range of challenges that can feel unsettling to discuss with the outside world. Finding the exact words to best communicate your troubles might feel hard or you might feel under pressure from others to attend therapy. We would work, at your own pace, in a comfortable consulting room conveniently located close to the centre of Guildford.

Whatever you are feeling now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Life can be tricky sometimes and you may think that people can't understand you because of what you are going through. Sometimes you need someone to listen to you, to help you to understand what is actually happening. I can help you to walk through this journey, to find a way to a safe place which respects your values and beliefs. You can talk about any issues that bother you and explore your emotions without judgment. I have 19 years of training and experience in a broad range of topics in psychotherapy counselling and educational therapy.

We can all have difficulties in everyday life and encounter problems that we simply find hard to cope with alone. You may feel worried, anxious, low, confused, isolated or may be experience difficulties in relationships. You may be suffering from feelings of low self esteem or low self confidence. You may have been diagnosed with anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, or maybe you are just feeling sad. When these feelings and thoughts persist and become overwhelming it may be difficult to know which way to turn.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
