Anxiety Counselling in Godstone
Whilst I am trained to work with a variety of everyday life and mental health problems, there are some I have exceptionally extensive experience in such as anxiety and depression, stress, self-esteem, struggles with faith, and loss.
Hi, I’m Emily.
Welcome to the world of counselling, and welcome back if you’ve been here before. It would be a privilege to work with you.
I am an integrative counsellor. This means our work will draw on a variety of counselling techniques such as IFS, CBT and creative methods. At my core I practice Gestalt therapy; a relational approach dealing with the 'here and now'. We can discuss any particular interest in a modality during our initial call.
I believe the relationship is the most important part of the therapeutic process and so our sessions would be client-lead whilst bringing my authentic self as well.

Hi, I'm Jackie. I feel very privileged to be able to work with both adults and children. When I am working with someone I always feel it is such an honour to be brought into their world and walk the journey with them for a while. As an Integrative counsellor I can use different ways to support the journey you are on. I offer my clients a bespoke way of working that suits them, working together on whatever may concern them. Whatever the age of the person, concern or difficulty they are going through I see them as the expert and I work collaboratively to support them in resolving issues or reaching goals they may set.

Or maybe it’s vaguer, and you sense persistent anxiety or low mood that won’t shift.
I work with people under pressure: stress, anxiety, burnout and trauma. Life may look fine outside but feel heavy inside after a shock or through years of pervasive anxiety or low mood - we’ll understand what drives it and build tools that shift it. You don’t need to explain yourself perfectly before we start. We can think it through together.

It brings company of anxiety that won't switch off, avoiding confrontation at almost any cost, a constant low hum of not being quite good enough.
I work with adults who, underneath their kindness and care, struggle with people-pleasing and never feeling good enough. I'm an Integrative Psychotherapist with over 10 years experience, including 5 in a specialist trauma service.
I've specialised in trauma and people-pleasing, drawing on hundreds of conversations with people who called themselves a 'people-pleaser' long before they ever thought to call it trauma. For many, it began somewhere specific, in childhood, in relationships that weren't quite safe enough to just be yourself. For others it was an accumulation of difficult experiences. Both matter. Both are welcome here.

It combines the usual practices of talking therapy - a safe confidential space to discuss what may be troubling you - with the possibility of using creativity to give further insight. Sometimes people like to paint, draw, use collage, clay, writing, poetry, photography or music.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
