Many clients are used to being the strong one: coping, caring for others, and pushing through, even when they're struggling inside. They may be experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, burnout, relationship difficulties, loss, or simply feeling stuck and overwhelmed. I offer a non-judgemental, compassionate and practical approach, helping you understand what's keeping you stuck and develop healthier ways of coping. Together, we'll build confidence, improve emotional wellbeing, and help you move forward with greater clarity, resilience and self-compassion.

I also hold postgraduate qualifications as a Dialectical Behaviour Therapist ( DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT).
I see that all behaviours such as self-harm, suicide attempts, drinking, drug abuse and other impulsive behaviours have developed as coping strategies to cope with and numb difficult emotions and experiences. These behaviours often act as a plaster to a deeper wound, but just like a plaster they don’t really ever fully heal unless they have time to heal properly. This is the work of therapy to take off the plaster and look more towards the root causes of the behaviour to work out what is going on for you. My instagram page offers an insight to how I work and might be helpful to get a further sense of how I work psychwithemma

Hi, I am a Clinical Psychologist, accredited CBT therapist and DBT therapist working with clients facing challenges in their life.
Therapy can often be saturated with ‘problem-talk’, and while there is need to focus on things that aren’t going as well as you would like, I also believe it is vital to incorporate strengths into therapy with the aim of fostering and developing these to help build resilience and use what you already have at your disposal.

I'm an integrative therapist working relationally, drawing on approaches like psychodynamic therapy, DBT, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Healing trauma takes time, and a truly trauma-informed approach. Many of us carry invisible wounds from childhood: the hypervigilance from growing up walking on eggshells, the self-criticism derived from caregivers who couldn't regulate their own emotions, or the deep sense of not being enough despite our achievements. Complex and developmental trauma doesn't always look like what people expect, but it lives in our bodies and shapes how we see ourselves and the world. I'm Shabnum, a trauma specialist who understands these struggles both professionally and personally.

My clients appreciate my holistic approach to mental health. Their goal is usually to find their authentic selves, to become more self aware and to thrive and find joy and purpose, not just survive and settle for a life that is not working for them. We all want to be seen, heard and understood and that is often at the very heart of Healing.

I use evidenced-based therapies (EMDR, Psychodynamic, CBT, DBT etc.) to guide treatment in a way that is adapted to each individual, to help make sense of their own difficulties and strengths.
The therapy I provide gears towards helping people make sense of their problems and stuck patterns that stop us from moving forward. Difficulties and symptoms are processed on a bodily, cognitive and emotional level. Through this process, we are able to create change in our lives to get 'unstuck'. My practice is grounded in a trauma-focused framework.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counsellors
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
