Women's Issues Counselling in Gillingham
In psychotherapy there is an opportunity to get to know yourself in depth and discover new ways of living your life. Often we have repetitive patterns and ways of thinking that can for instance cause suffering, frustration, anxiety and sadness in our life. Despite our best efforts to decide to behave and relate differently, we drift back to our old ways of being and behaving. In psychotherapy we will work at getting to know your unconscious inner life. A lot of feelings and thoughts we have are not conscious and psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to reflect and try out new ways when you feel change is needed.

I am a trauma informed counsellor and psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and mentor. I have been in therapy myself and I know first-hand the feeling of darkness, pain and trauma, but I also know what it's like to feel light again. That is why I trained as a therapist myself, so that I could support individuals in the same way that my therapist supported me when I needed it most. You are not alone, and I am here for you!

Occasionally, we find ourselves experiencing a wide range of difficulties. It could be anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, grief, or just a sense that you do not feel good enough no matter how hard you try. Whatever the reason, I understand that it can feel incredibly isolating and as if no one seems to understand you or how you are feeling. It can reach a point where we begin to recognise that something has got to change; but are just not sure what that is yet. I truly believe that part of the healing power is the ability to untangle your thoughts and feelings freely, without the fear of judgement and being truly heard.

I work with people who want to understand themselves more deeply, not only to reduce anxiety or low mood, but to make sense of who they are, their relationships, and how they want to live.
Often, this includes people who are already quite reflective, but find that thinking alone hasn’t led to the clarity or change they’re looking for. There may be a sense of feeling stuck, unsettled, or unsure of direction, even when things appear to be functioning on the surface.

If you’re done with old, worn-out stories of what came before, take my hand. If you’re feeling stuck, dwelling on the past, dissecting and reflecting long after gaining the lessons there, take my hand. If you know it's time to close the book and begin anew, open and excited for what comes next, take my hand.
If within the excitement you find you are also frightened, unsure and doubtful, yes, come take my hand. This only means you're about to do something worthwhile and brave, and you are remembering what it’s like to truly feel alive again.
Let's take a deep breath and begin, let's walk this journey together, I'm here to listen.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
