I am a play and creative arts therapist, with additional training in sandplay therapy. I work with children aged 4-14 years and increasingly with children who are aged 8+. Play is a developmentally appropriate therapy for children. Older children often talk more about what is going on for them too and creative arts therapy (such as sandplay and art) helps deepen self-awareness and self-expression. I offer a safe, gentle and sensitive space for children and young people to be accepted however they are. I have experience in working with a range of presenting issues and difficulties and work collaboratively with parents.

Hi, I’m Ash, the founder of Sonder Therapies, based in Frome. Deciding to reach out for support can be a difficult but significant step and Sonder Therapies was created with that in mind. Sonder is the recognition that each person, from strangers on the street to loved ones in our lives, has a complex and meaningful story as vivid and complex as our own. This word captures my approach to therapy - a deep commitment to seeing you as a unique individual with your own experiences, dreams, and challenges. It is a reminder that healing often grows from understanding our connections to others and the world around us.

I support adults navigating anxiety, chronic stress, burnout, grief, or developmental trauma. Many feel frozen, hypervigilant, or disconnected from their bodies due to old imprints and attachment wounds. They come seeking a deeper connection to themselves and a way to release held patterns. I help them move forward by gently re-patterning the nervous system. Integrating the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)—a music-based listening therapy—we acoustically stimulate the vagus nerve to restore safety from the bottom up, building emotional resilience and inner stillness.

I continue to be deeply interested in understanding the unique struggle each of us undergo throughout our lives, sometimes more than once. In providing a safe, facilitating environment within which a process of unfolding, unlearning and enabling new self-learning, then an exploration can take place between us. Through greater understanding of our innermost self, together we can begin to allow the possibility for change.

Overwhelmed, shutdown & anxiety, past/ present trauma or neurodivergence. You might feel overwhelmed, shut down, or constantly on edge, and talking about it hasn’t really helped. I support trauma-affected and neurodivergent adults and teens (Autism, ADHD, OCD) who feel anxious, disconnected, or pushed beyond their capacity. Many people come to me after trying therapy and still feeling stuck. We work gently with both mind and body so you can feel calmer, safer, and more like yourself again.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
