Bereavement Counselling in Framlingham

I have a lot of experience working with loss and grief, and also perinatal mental health, however I work with a wide range of issues.
My primary training is in a holistic and transpersonal model of therapy, which means I work with the whole person - mind, body, feelings and hold the perspective that the problems we face also hold potential for something new to emerge. I use an integrative and relational approach and believe therapy should adapt to meet each client’s needs. This means our sessions might sometimes involve deep discussions on concepts and theories, while at other times, we may focus more on emotions, or imagery, or something which feels more ‘coach-like’ in style.

I provide a professional, empathetic and confidential space for adults suffering from depression, anxieties, trauma, low mood, overwhelm, stress and unexpected changes such as loss.
Just listening can be enough. I also have techniques we can use to manage: Depression: How to re-engage with activities and people. Anxieties: Psychoeducation on the causes and methods to gradually reduce anxiety. Phobias: Gradually building tolerance. Bereavement/ loss: Talking about and processing the whole event to enable a way forward. Trauma: Grounding.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns that no longer feel helpful. Perhaps you’re used to coping on your own and have reached a point where things feel harder to manage. You want some clarity, steadiness, and relief from constant worry or self-criticism and a space where you can talk openly without feeling judged. You may not have clear answers yet, but you’re hoping therapy can help you understand yourself better and find a kinder, more sustainable way forward. You don’t need to have the right words, we can work things out together.

I aim to work with people who wish to re-orientate their lives in the direction of their values - towards what gives them a sense of meaning and purpose. Having a clearer idea of what really matters helps people motivate themselves - even to the extent of accepting the difficulties it may entail - to either change or persist in behaviours that will move them in their own valued directions. This trans-diagnostic approach can be powerfully effective in dealing with the pervasive problems of stress, anxiety and depression and other chronic issues where rigid patterns of avoidant behaviour have developed.

While I work with a wide range of needs, I have particular proficiency in: • Bereavement: Space to stay with grief when the world says "move on
You don’t have to carry the weight alone. Hi, I'm Phil.  Feeling low, anxious, or isolated can make you feel like a "black sheep". But in my experience—both professional and personal—these struggles aren't failures; they are part of being human. I provide a non-judgmental yet challenging space where your voice is truly heard. Together, we’ll tap into your innate resilience to help you move from surviving to flourishing.

You may be experiencing anxiety, stress, bereavement, relationship problems, depression, addiction, low self-esteem or something you can’t quite grasp but that is troubling you.
Counselling Works Because… Counselling works in part simply because the act of talking with someone who is not a family member or in your immediate circle, can be very helpful in gaining a new perspective about what is going on for you. The benefit of a neutral confidential space is something I regularly hear from clients I work with. In addition my approach is to ask questions and ‘thought experiments’ that can assist you in finding your own creative solutions to whatever is troubling you.

I am an integrative counsellor with a passion for helping my clients grow in understanding of themselves and others, working together with them to bring about healing and change. I place my clients at the centre of their therapy, giving them autonomy and choice. I see my role as journeying with my clients as they bring the issues that are troubling them. We will work together to find answers. I seek to use different counselling approaches, like tools in a toolkit, that best fit with each client. I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is the fundamental ingredient for change and growth to take place.

I help adults handle trauma, grief and big life changes through weekly/fortnightly sessions or Therapy Intensives.
Together, we’ll figure out why you feel the way you do and what you need in order to become clearer, calmer or more confident making choices that are right for you. With curiosity and compassion, we’ll work to understand critical internal voices, connect with parts of you that maybe got a bit lost, and help you find ways to cope with difficult emotions.

I have years of experience and training in areas of relationships, depression, anxiety, bereavement and loss to name a few.
Sometimes we simply get stuck or lost and don't know which way to turn. This is true in all areas of life and not one of us is exempt. The feelings can result in anxiety, depression, stress which can impact relationships and work. Sometimes we have no idea whats going on and the simpliest of things can feel overwhelming. When offered a safe space to be really heard and understood, these feelings can begin to feel much smaller and no longer feel insurmountable

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
